MLS Tickets - FC Dallas 3, Fire 0

By Brent Warnken
Jun 15, 2009
The Chicago Fire appeared to be in prime position to match the longest MLS unbeaten streak to start a season, but they didn't make it happen. They were defeated by Jeff Cunningham, Kenny Cooper, and the entire FC Dallas squad in a 3-0 loss at Toyota Park. Chicago (5-1-6) were on a franchise-record 11-game unbeaten streak and coming off a third consecutive road victory, but couldn't generate any offense against FC Dallas. They were looking to tie the league-record 12-game unbeaten streak set by Los Angeles in 1996 and Kansas City in 2000. The Fire only had two shots on goal against Dallas (2-6-3), which entered the match with the fewest points in MLS. Get MLS tickets and see Cunningham score a goal.

Chicago coach Denis Hamlett blamed the loss on fatigue when he said the club had a long week, which included three games and a cross country trip. He firmly believes the trip caught up with the team. Dallas' Cunningham scored a goal in the 15th minute, which gave his team a 1-0 lead. The forward hurdled over a group of players and positioned himself for the ball. Dave van den Bergh kicked the ball over to Cunningham, who head butted the ball into the net. The goal was the forward's first of the season and 19 in 30 games against Chicago (his highest total against any club). After the match, Cunningham told the press he has been around long enough to have a lot of history against most teams in the league.

The forward has 105 goals in 13-plus seasons to rank fourth all-time. 20 minutes after Dallas' first goal, Fire defender C.J. Brown had a pass from Dax McCarty bounce off the top of his head and floated in the wrong direction, right in his own net. This was Brown's second game of the season. He replaced defender Wilman Conde after he injured his shoulder against Chivas. Chicago was without their key player, Cuauhtemoc Blanco, who was recalled to Mexico's national team for a pair of World Cup Qualifiers. Cooper scored the third goal of the game with only 10 minutes remaining. The soccer star nailed a free kick from 25 yards away that deflected off the crossbar and came down just over the goal line.

This was FCD's first win since April 19th. The free hick was awarded when Fire defender Bakary Soumare received a red card for knocking down Brek Shea on a breakaway. After the red card incident, Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman had been tossed out of the game for arguing with a fan. The coach made a "3-0" gesture with his hands to the crowd as he left the field. Hyndman told the press at home you can live with the fans, on the road you don't have to listen to them. The coach is referring to the bottle that was thrown on his head. The fourth official told the other officials that Hyndman had a conversation with a fan and before the coach knew it, he was leaving the field.
