5 Points To Think About Before Picking A Logo
Some decisions you only get to make once, but they will affect you for the rest of your life, or at least the rest of the time you are in business. The best example of this kind of decision is the choice of name and logo for a business. Both are really important and can determine the direction in which your business will go. Here are 5 important points to consider when choosing a logo.
Does the logo reflect what you want your business to be? A logo will say a lot about your business to a potential customer. More importantly, though, you want to have control over that message to be sure that it is saying what it is that you want for it to say. For example, if you are in the medical business, you might not want a logo that is extremely playful; it may send the wrong message. However, if you are in the entertainment business, playful may be okay. Whatever the case may be, make sure that you are sending the right message to the customer; it can make or break you.
Does it resemble any other logo you are familiar with? You dont want your logo to become easily confused with another companys logo or to infringe on any trademarked symbol or licensed image. Think about logos that have now become almost universally accepted symbols for a particular brand"like the golden arches for McDonalds, the Michelin man for Michelin tires, or the girl with the braids for Wendys. You dont want your logo to look like a knock-off of a logo that already exists! It wont achieve the purposes you desire and it could get you into legal trouble.
Is it timeless? Once you have established your logo, you have established your identity. You want your logo to be recognizable to customers, so that last thing you want to do once you have achieved this is to change it. It can cause confusion, cause you to lose customers, or create a new impression about your business that you may not be satisfied with. To avoid any of this hassle, be sure that your logo is timeless and that it can evolve with your business.
Is it easy to identify and recognize - even at a distance? It is most likely that your business logo will be incorporated on print products, in marketing, in promotional items, on signs, billboards, graphics, online, in magazines, and in various venues where old, new, and potential customers will be able to see. The goal is to make so that your logo is quickly and easily identified by these people. Think of this little tidbit when making a final decision. Make sure that your logo will stand out in a herd.
Do you love your logo? This is probably one of the most important because you are going to have to live with it. While it must follow the preceding criteria, it must also follow this one. If you are not 100% satisfied, then keep looking. If you do not like the way that it looks both on business cards and on billboards, then look again. Choosing a logo is like getting married: you only want to do it once, because getting a second one comes with a whole lot of clean up!
