Keeping Your Home Cool With Floor Tiles

By Thomas Pretty

England isn't really known for its warm weather - in fact Brits are constantly complaining about the cold and will do their best to spend at least a part of their year in a country with a warmer climate. However, though it may be not be tropical temperatures outside, many people can find themselves uncomfortably hot inside their homes, especially those in newer buildings.

I'm currently living in a flat on the top floor of a new building and though it's a nice place to live, it can be cold outside and still very hot indoors. I suppose the hot air rising from the homes below means that it all ends up in our flat, but whatever the reason, my flatmates and I often find ourselves sweating and feeling lethargic while indoors. We recently decided that the carpet and laminate flooring weren't helping with the air circulation and we decided to replace much of the flat's flooring with tiles.

Though we weren't big on the idea of replacing the carpet in the lounge or bedrooms with tiles, we did think that the bathroom, kitchen and hallway were prime locations for them which would hopefully help to cool the flat down.

After discussing the issue with the landlords, we found a supplier on the internet which carried a wide range of tiles, making it possible to choose a floor which fitted the decor of the rooms and we placed the order, hoping we could find the time to replace the flooring before summer really began.

The tiles were delivered quickly and were priced reasonably enough that we decided it would be better to hire a professional to install them rather than do it ourselves and potentially do it wrong. The first thing the installer said when he walked into the flat was how hot the place was, reinforcing that we'd made the right decision.

Fixing the tiles took less time than we were expecting and the installer was very methodical meaning that we didn't experience a huge upheaval while he was working, reinforcing to us that we had made the right decision.

With all indications being that we're going to experience a long and very hot summer, I'm very glad we decided to tile much of our flat. Though we're still going to need to use fans, hopefully we won't need to have them on as high a setting as we would have done were everywhere in the flat still carpeted or laminated. Aesthetically, the flat looks much better, the tiled floors are easier to clean and will hopefully keep us cool during the summer.
