In A Digital World We Still Need Physical Storage

By Thomas Pretty

Looking around my room today, I found myself thinking about how strange and cunning consumerism is - almost every manufacturer of just about everything we find ourselves buying seems to have conspired to make everything smaller yet more powerful. We have computers which can fit into our pockets, music players which can double as choking hazards, video cameras the size of mobile phones; it just seems like everything's getting smaller and the more I think about it, everything's getting smaller purely so that we can fit more possessions into our living spaces.

However, even with so many electronics becoming more compact, there comes a point where we just run out of room. I encountered this recently; despite the amount of gadgets I have littering my desks and shelves - most of which have a smaller footprint than a drinks coaster - I still found myself running out of space due to the amount of books I have, so I began to look into some options to improve my storage situation.

Books are one of those remnants from the pre-digital age which many of us - myself included - cannot bring ourselves to part with, but books do tend to take up a lot of space. I have many which I haven't read for a while, but don't want to sell or throw away because I firmly believe that I'll want to read them again sometime, so they're just taking up space in my flat. Books resist the compression conspiracy of every other item we buy as they can't really be shrunk without becoming unreadable, so they just take up space that could be utilised by other possessions. Not wanting to sell them, but needing to make some room, I found myself looking into placing some of them in storage.

The idea of physical storage seems quite odd in the world I live in, where space is usually discussed in terms of gigabytes and terabytes rather than feet and inches, but the more I looked into it, the more it made sense. After a quick internet search, I found a local provider who offered units the size of a locker to rooms with several thousand square feet of space, meaning that I'd be able to find a unit which would have more than enough room to store the books I wasn't going to read for a while. After deciding which books and other possessions I would store, I reserved a unit online and made the trip over there with my possessions.

The whole process storing my belongings was simple and I found myself with a lot more space in my room. Though it often seems that everything is getting smaller, there seems to come a point in everyone's life where they just run out of space and need to do something about it, whether it's buying a bigger hard drive or renting a storage unit for their physical possessions.
