New England Revolution Tickets - Twellman Becomes Part of 100-Goal Club

By Brent Warnken
Jun 16, 2009
Every goal inspires a celebration, but when Taylor Twellman nailed in the third goal for New England Revolution's match against the New York Red Bulls, the excitement was much bigger than an average goal. The reason for the commotion is that the goal marked Twellman's 100th, making him one of only five players in MLS history to achieve such a feat. The goal came in the 57th minute of the game when he headed in an assist from Shalrie Joseph. The fact that his 100th goal fame from a header is appropriate since that is the type of goal Twellman has come to be known for over the years. Surprisingly, Twellman wasn't done with that goal. He gave the Revolution their last goal of the 4-0 win in the 64th minute when he scored again off of an assist by Steve Ralston. Each goal after this will only push him further up the record board, and fans can be there with New England Revolution tickets online.

Twellman has a storied history in the MLS and U.S. Soccer. He played both soccer and baseball in high school, receiving a baseball scholarship to Maryland. He played soccer at Maryland for two seasons in 1998 and 1999, tallying 28 goals and 17 assists. In 1999, he also started playing with the U.S. Under-20 team. After two years of college soccer, he left for Germany to play professionally in Europe. He started with TSV 1860 Munich and stayed for two seasons. He was offered to stay with the club for two more years, but instead chose to come back to the United States to play in the MLS.

In 2002, he was selected by the New England Revolution in the first round of the MLS Draft as the second overall pick. That year, he was the runner up for the MLS MVP, showing the promise of his budding career. He played in 28 games that year and tallied 23 goals and six assists. He routinely let his team in scoring and has been a mainstay on the team ever since. He helped take the Revolution to the MLS Cup in 2007 and has helped the team make many post-season appearances. With the U.S. Men's National Team, Twellman has earned 30 caps and has also scored six goals as of January of 2009.

Twellman is on good company on this list. Four out of the five players on the over-100 list are still playing in the MLS. The current leader on the list is Jaime Moreno. He is followed by Ante Razov, Jason Kreis and Jeff Cunningham. Of course, it hasn't hurt Twellman that he has the all-time leader in assists, Steve Ralston, on his squad with him. Twellman is also number seven on the list of all-time shots taken, fifth for shots on goal, fourth for game-winning goals, tied for fifth for multi-goal games and tied for sixth for hat tricks. The season is not yet over, meaning Twellman could move up on these lists even further.
