History Of The Original Red Dawn

By Matthew McKernan
Jun 17, 2009
Today in Hollywood everything that was old is new again as studios rush to fill seats in theaters and keep the millions flowing. A number of classic films are coming back to the big screen, but they might be a little different than we remember especially their message, and that was the important part of films like Red Dawn.

In 1984 with the cold war still raging writer/director John Milius released the alternative history classic Red Dawn. In the film the Soviet Union faced with a sever food shortage, and a liberal Europe launches and all out attack, and with their allies invades the continental United Sates. The Soviet war machine which strikes first makes significant headway, but it is soon stalled by American resistance, and is faced with a conventional war.

The heroes of the story are a group of young Americans from the town of Calumet Colorado. The film begins with them narrowly escaping an attack by Russian paratroopers, and after gathering arms and provisions wage a guerilla war against the invading armies in the mountains around their community. It is a great action film and it is a very patriotic film that depicted Americans as tough survivors fighting for their freedom, but the Hollywood of today seems to feel the need to change that message.

Why is it that a website about self defense is taking time to discuss and action movie remake, much less one that doesn't really have any hand to hand combat in it? The fact is that the reasons why we fight are as important as how we fight, and every warrior needs a value system that you feel is worth fighting and dying for if need be. In the original film you saw a handful of scared kids fighting and dying in the mountains for the same beliefs the founding fathers fought so hard to forge.

You watch as the brutality of war turn girls and boys into grizzled combat veterans, and a society on the brink of annihilation. Sure the scenario was unlikely and you could just call it a cheesy action film, but it was all about fighting for America and what you hold most dear, and that is an important message. In real life issues our complex, but when you're fighting it is about winning and you need inspiration.

The remake of the film sounds promising in that Dan Bradley who has a number of action films to his credits will be directing, but the script while it promises to follow the original story line has some flaws. This time around the Chinese are the invaders though the Russians will be joining the fight at some point. The reason for the war isn't because of bold communist aggression, but rather because America supports Taiwan and China's need for oil, so this is all some how the fault of the United States.

The characters from the original will be there, but slightly different and more diverse, and of coarse new villains. I hope despite our PC environment and ultra liberal Hollywood Red Dawn will get the chance to stir patriotic feelings in film goers. Considering a number of recent war films haven't been to patriotic it is hard to know what to expect. Still though there is plenty of patriotic inspiration out there from books, films, and online. When it is one on one the situations is much clearer, because it is all about survival, but always remember why the good guys are the good guys. Take care of yourself and keep training. Wolverines!
