Best Casino Odds: Where to Find Them

By Terri Hua

If you're serious about gambling, you must realize that in every casino, odds will vary from game to game. It's critical then that you study the attractiveness of those odds before deciding which game you'll try to master.

Unless you have an addictive craving for a certain game, you should always focus on the games that offer the best casino odds to the player. And since virtually every game has some sort of an edge for the house, you're really searching for the game that puts you at the least disadvantage against the house. Two traditional casino games stand out as clear winners in giving the house the smallest advantage over the player: Craps and Blackjack.

Craps not only presents some of the most excitement and entertainment in a casino, it also offers several bets that provide absolutely no advantage to the house. These attractive wagers occur when the casino payout percentages are the same as the mathematical odds of a certain number being rolled.

For example, the odds are 2 to 1 against a player rolling a 4 before rolling a 7. If the house payout on that roll is also 2 to 1, there is no advantage to the house. This wonderful situation is offered to all players that place a wager on the Pass or Come lines. The house does have an advantage on the initial Pass or Come line wager since the payout on these lines is even money, even though the actual casino odds are greater.

But once a point has been established, players can choose to "take the odds" by placing an additional wager behind their original Pass or Come bet. And if the point is then made, the player will get true odds on that additional wager.

For example, if 10 is the point established on a Pass or Come bet the odds are 2 to 1 against the player winning the bet. If the point is made, the initial Pass or Come bet will pay even money. But the additional bet that took the odds will pay 2 to 1. At casinos that allow a player to take odds of at least two-times the initial wager, the blended house advantage is a relatively miniscule .6% or less.

Blackjack is really the only other casino game that can offer situations where the casino odds are as favorable as, or even more favorable than, the odds at craps. The key here is to be able to identify those situations arise and then to take advantage of them.

Overall, at Blackjack the house has an advantage of just around .8% against a player using a sound basic strategy of play. But after the deal, certain hands will present the player with an actual advantage against the house.

For example, when the player is dealt two cards totaling eleven the player has an advantage over the house if the dealer is showing a 6. Savvy players will then double down to put more money on the table when presented with such an advantageous situation.

All other games carry casino odds that are far more advantageous for the house than Craps or Blackjack, with the worst casino games odds being found at double-zero roulette and Keno. Stick with the games where you'll enjoy the best odds and your chances for success at gambling will improve.
