New York City Restaurants to Avoid When Visiting NYC

By Shawn Hickman
Jun 17, 2009
Every September the New York State Senate publishes a list of the dirtiest restaurants in New York City. This list is comprised of restaurants that have the most violations from the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

The three degrees of violations include general violations, documentation violations regarding displaying of licenses, and critical violations directly affecting health. Multiple pest violations are one of the reasons many of these restaurants ended up on the list of "The Dirtiest Restaurants in NYC". Here are eight of the worst restaurants from 2008 that have been inspected for 2009 and failed for yet another year.

El Barrio restaurant in Manhattan failed inspection again on May 4, 2009. Violations included non-food contact surfaces improperly constructed or maintained, facility not vermin proof, evidences of live animals present in food and non-food areas, no food protection certificate, and hot foods not held to the proper temperature.

Also in Manhattan, Ray's Candy Store received ten violations ranging from spoiled food to mice and flying insects. Last year, they only had two violations dealing with garbage issues and hot foods not held to the proper temperature. City Perk in Manhattan not only failed inspection last year, but has also failed four times this year. Plumbing and sanitary violations such as no facilities to wash, rinse, or sanitize equipment are the cause.

While Guacamole'x in the Bronx received less than the number of citations it needed for a re-inspection, it still received three violations for badly constructed surfaces, facility not vermin proof, and evidence of roaches present. Increasing their number of violations since last year was La Conejita in the Bronx. Mice, roaches, flying insects, toilets not maintained, and spoiled food were among the list for this year.

Cholula Bakery in Queens received ten citations this year increased from their one the year before. Some of the issues this year include spoiled foods, personal cleanliness inadequate, and food contact surfaces not washed. Last year Guyana Bakery in Queens received a violation for harboring favorable conditions for vermin.

This year not only were they cited for evidence of mice, but also for improper use of pesticide, improper plumbing, inadequate lighting, and an unavailable permit. Also in Queens Tequila Sunset Corporation was cited last year for mice. This year, six other violations in addition to the mice were added, including spoiled food.

Trying out new restaurants can be fun and exciting, especially in New York City. But beware of these restaurants that have failed basic health and safety inspections for two years in a row.
