By Aydan Corkern

"Beowulf" is an old, verbally handed down Nordic legend of Beowulf and Grendel originating from about 500B.C. Grendel keeps coming to Denmark, and killing anyone he wants. The countrymen have no luck in stopping him King Rothgar sends a call far and near to heroes to vanquish the demon. He promises endless riches to the one who can Beowulf, the Viking, shows up and kills the horrible beast. Grendel's mother is very angry and seeks revenge with Beowulf. Grendel's mother is very pretty and strikes a deal with Beowulf.

The big high definition phenomenon with Beowulf is that instead of using animation to create the computer generation, actors are used and then put into the computer to animate. This gives us what is both a more realistic animation as well as something lacking. Beowulf is best viewed in high definition. The action scenes and new animations are very worth that much, but there is something that does not get recreated in this format. There are dead eyes and limbs that do not move quite right.

There are no fuzzy parts or standard animation flaws. This type of animation as well as the high definition dvd format leaves room for darker movies. The high definition on your home theater will show all the small color and light differences in each shadow and cave.

The true high definition Dolby surround sound manages to convey all the thrilling heroics right into your ears with shocking clarity. High definition sound adds so much to action movies and is definitely worth a listen if you are skeptical about converting.

The high definition DVD is filled with all manner of bonus material to educate you about how they made the film and how the actors held up to the new format. The special features give you an amazing inside look at high definition filming and animation as well as sound technology. On top of that you get a first class lesson in special effects.

Beowulf is a great technological experiment as well as a test for the high definition format in all ways. There is an interview with the director as well as some deleted scenes on the second disk, so it is worth the buy to get the extended edition. The director explains his motivation in telling this ancient tale with such an advanced format. The duality of the two comes together in the movie, and you do get the sense of traveling in time in a surreal way.
