Movie Review Of Eastern Promises In High Definition
"Eastern Promises" comes off as a straightforward crime drama about the Russian mafia and the lady who finds herself caught up in it, but we find a number of shocking moments here. Viggo Mortensen joins us in this film, lending some big screen credibility as well as a penchant for violent movies where he is allowed to yell a bit.
The movie is set in London, although it appears to be taking place somewhere in Russia. This Russian area of London is occupied, in part, by a midwife who works at a local hospital. A Russian girl dies in her hospital giving birth, and this sets the midwife on a path to finding out who this girl is. She comes across a diary and business card in the things this girl left behind. The problem is that the diary is written in Russian.
She goes to a restaurant she knows to have someone translate the diary. An older gentleman named Semyon invites her in treats her well when she tells him her purpose for being there. He makes an offer to translate the diary if the midwife will only return the next day.
She returns, against the wishes of her family, and has the diary translated. It details the inner workings of a Russian crime syndicate famous for murder, rape, prostitution, and drug trafficking. It comes to light that the old man translating this diary freely for her is the leader of a high ranking crime family. It also comes to light that he would rather his driver take over the family than his savage and barbaric son.
Watching the climb into the high places in Russian crime is a twisting and winding journey told through violence and tattoos. You have to have certain tattoos to rank in the Russian crime hierarchy. Our character is only missing two of those famous markings. The film is very psychological in the way it comes together, and the action scenes as well as the intensely classical music are perfect for your high definition home theater. High definition sound carries all the noises of the city in perfect time, and high definition keeps up with the violence as well as the dark shadows of this flick.
The end of the movie leaves you with the need for an education, so the high definition glory continues with a feature on the secret world of Russian tattoos. Each marking a Russian criminal gets means something, and this documentary gives you a good look. The high definition will bring this art form to life in front of your eyes.
