By Brent Warnken
Jun 17, 2009
Omar Cummings' goal in the 88th minute tied up the game and the Colorado Rapids left the field with a 1-1 tie with Real Salt Lake last week. The forward told the press that his club showed a lot of character by getting another point on the road. He also added that the Rapids have depth and confidence with whoever is on the field. Colorado (4-2-5) had two key players out of the lineup, Pablo Mastroeni and forward Conor Casey. They were with the United States team, which defeated Honduras 2-1 in a World Cup Qualifier earlier that night. Although Casey has scored four goals in his last three games, and is tied with Kansas City's Guillermo Barros Schellotto for the league scoring lead with eight, the Rapids are only 2-0-4 in its last six games. Get MLS tickets and see Cummings score a goal.

Colorado head coach Gary Smith said his team will have to continue to mount a serious charge if they expect to make the playoffs. The team has already played seven road games and look to pick up plenty of points at home. Real Salt Lake also had two players missing from their lineup. Midfielders Kyle Beckerman and Javier Morales served one-game suspensions due to yellow-card accumulation. RSL's Yura Movsisyan scored in the 79th minute after he received a pass from Fabian Espindola in the box and went around a defender to get one past goalkeeper Matt Pickens. RSL midfielder Clint Mathis admitted that the Rapids did well defensively to keep the game close, but Real Salt Lake was able to break them down and get a goal.

RSL had numerous opportunities throughout the game but couldn't capitalize on their early scoring chances. The team dropped to 0-4-3 in its last seven games. Forward Robbie Findley had the best chances in the first half, but headers in the 21st and 30th minutes were just wide of the net. The third opportunity came when Espindola's header in the 63rd minute ricocheted off the crossbar. RSL outshot Colorado 18-9, including a 4-3 in shots on goal. RSL coach Jason Kreis believes his team will learn from this game and make the adjustments they need for their next. His team went down a man in the 82nd minute when Robbie Russell was tossed out of the game for receiving his second yellow card.

Although Smith was not happy with his team's performance, he's content with picking up a point. He thanked the younger guys on the team for stepping up and filling the void left by Pablo and Conor. Each year, both teams play for the Rocky Mountain Cup, a trophy awarded to the winner of the series. Since the Rapids already won against the RSL earlier in the season, they were hoping to clinch the cup last week. But they will have another shot when both teams meet for the final time on October 24. Cumming was disappointed they did not capture the cup. He said they won the cup for the past two years, but must patiently wait for the next game against RSL before they can.
