How To Increase The Wireless Signal On Your Network
You've just done the wireless connection on your computer and you are already feeling pretty much like an It technician. Everything is nice and peachy until you notice that if you go a few meters away from the router the signal is dangerously decreasing. This decrease in wireless signal power can be a cause of the conditions youve organized the network in.
Remember that location is very important. The place in which you place the router will determine in a very high degree the coverage range. Depending on your apartments architecture, place the router or the access point centrally. If this is not possible, its no problem, there are other ways of increasing the coverage range of the wireless signal. At this point you need to read on, for other suggestions.
Move the router away from walls, metal objects and never ever place it on the floor. If it is very close to walls and objects it will get a lot of interference from them and the resulting signal will be as weak as it gets.
If you have a large budget, you could try buying a better antenna for your router. Some devices work only in one direction, as opposed to the included antenna. If it emits signals in one direction and not in circles, the signal will travel longer distances in that respective direction. Just turn the antenna around each time you move location or if you decide you need coverage in other direction.
You can also increase the wireless signal by buying a network card that is newer and enhanced. Some wireless cards use external connections on USB and they function better getting a greater coverage area. These are not expensive at all.
Still, if you like you network card and dont want an external one, you can opt in for a wireless repeater. The wireless repeater or access point will permit you to increase the coverage area of the wireless network, more than two times. It must be also placed as central as possible. Never place it near the router, because if you do so you are missing the whole point of this device.
Another advice is to change the routers emitting channel. Read the instructions manual and you will find there more details on how to change the channel. If you have a weak signal, changing the channel can sometimes improve it, in those cases in which the first channel was too used in the area.
Some people choose to make their own wireless booster or antenna out of simple things like empty metal cans. If you want to experiment, there are lots of guides around the internet that can turn you in a little inventor.
