Psychic Mediums are Everywhere in the World

Dowsing is an ancient form of divination, and one that most people associate with the finding of water. It has long been used for that purpose, but its application also extends to locating lost objects and consultation with the spirit world for guidance. Dowsers who can effectively utilize the pendulum as a tool in their psychic readings are some of the more psychically attuned individuals in the psychic field, although it is a method that even novice psychics can attempt.

Unfortunately, none of these works maintained the style or flavor of the authors' writings in life, leading many to doubt whether Baxter had contacted anyone at all. One notion held by many researchers is that when the medium enters into the trance-like state, his or her deeper subconscious is opened, and that the messages delivered are actually obtained from within the psychic's own mind. Though this theory may hold some validity, similar arguments could be made against nearly every other form of psychic divination. Moreover, the theory fails to account for any psychic who, during psychic readings, channels messages containing information beyond the medium's scope of experience.

Fans of Shakespeare are familiar with the Bard's oft-quoted line from Romeo and Juliet: "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet". Which of course means that it matters less what a thing is called than what that thing is. She was, of course, referring to Romeo's last name, Montague - she could just as easily have been referring to the title "psychic", as those with paranormal abilities have been and continue to be called by many names. A review of just a few of the names and titles used in reference to persons with psychic dispositions is revealing, as it provides a quick insight the depth and breadth of the world of the paranormal.

Precog is a more modern term for a prophet, and is more closely associated with paranormal abilities than the more well-known title of prophet. A psychic with precognitive abilities is able to ascertain events before they happen. Another type of precognition involves ascertaining the future through one's emotions, and is called presentiment. Psychics with either ability are often referred to as clairvoyants. Clairvoyance extends beyond even these two base forms, and can also involve psychic intuition derived from clairsentience (feeling/touching), clairaudience (hearing/listening), clairalience (smelling), claircognizance (knowing), and even clairgustance (tasting).

The theory behind the Barnum Effect is derived from observations and studies where individuals accept vague and general information that could apply to any number of people, internalize it, and validate the information as being specifically for them. This validation has been demonstrated in the use of personality tests, as well as psychic readings. Skeptics who have observed many psychic sessions over a period of time assert that a portion of any psychic reading produces the type of vague statements that can easily be applied to any person's circumstances. In conjunction with some alleged psychics' talents for cold reading - a skill also used by everyone from salespeople to politicians - the Barnum Effect is believed to provide the undergirding of many people's belief in psychic phenomena.
