Ten Tips for Reducing Stress in Your Life

Aug 17, 2007
Have we not all felt stress at one time or another? However, there are those who feel it more often than others. To them, stress has become a part of their daily routine.

Stress has been linked as a likely cause of numerous symtoms of disease. These conditions include symptoms of coronary artery disease, stroke, immune disorders, gastrointestinal problems such as irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease, eating problems, diabetes, sleep disturbances, and sexual reproductive dysfunction.

It is important that you learn to reduce your stress levels so that you can live a happier, healthier and maybe longer life.

The National Health Association recently recommended ten tips that will help you reduce your stress.

Be realistic - Learn to say no rather than taking on every project and set realistic goals.

Should you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, eliminate an activity that is not essential. It will help to ask yourself, "what really has to be done? Is this deadline realistic."

Don't expect perfection. After all, no one is perfect. So, don't expect perfection from yourself or others. When you find you need help, ask for it.

Meditate - It is easy to do and takes only a few minutes. In 10-20 minutes of meditation, you will realize the benefits.

You will find that quiet quiet reflection may bring relief from stress and increase your tolerance to it. Sit quietly, listen to peaceful music, relax, and try to think of pleasant things or think of nothing.

Visualize - Picture in your mind how you can manage some stressful situation in a calm successful way.

You can use this technique with almost any situation. Try it with an important presentation at work, taking a test or even your next move.

A visual rehearsal can enhance self-confidence and provide a more positive attitude toward a difficult task.

Do one thing at a time. - Try taking on one task at a time to prevent getting a feeling of being overwhelmed.

Make a list of things you need to do. Put the most urgent task at the top. Once you have accomplished it, cross it off and move on to the next one. The positive feeling of crossing things off can be very motivating.

Exercise - Regular exercise is a good way to reduce stress, and it benefits the body as well as the mind. Just 20-30 minutes of physical activity a day can do the trick.

Practice a hobby - A hobby is a good way to take a break from the stress factors of life while doing something you really enjoy. Try gardening, painting, or reading. Schedule time to indulge your interests.

Practice a healthful lifestyle. - Eating healthfully will make a difference. Also avoid things like smoking, excessive alcohol, and excessive caffeine.

Make sure your daily routine includes adequate rest and exercise, Remember to achieve a balance between work and play.

Share your feelings. - Talking about things can help you feel better. A conversation with a trusted friend can help you relax, and you can take the focus off yourself by listening to someone else.

Stay in touch with your family and friends; don't try to cope with life alone.

Give in occasionally. - You don't always have to be right. Be flexible and willing to compromise. If you do, others may be willing to compromise, too.

When you know you are right, stand your ground in a calm and rational manner. Remember to listen and make allowances for other's opinions.

Go easy with criticism. - Expecting to much from others and yourself can lead to feelings of frustration. It may cause you to have a feeling of being let down or disappointment.

Everyone, including yourself, has shortcomings, but each also has qualities of inner beauty they can share.
