Breast Reduction: Possible Problems And Consequences

Aug 17, 2007
She might hope that reduction mammoplasty can help her to say good bye to the grooves on her shoulders. When a woman has heavy breasts, then her bra straps frequently cause the appearance of such grooves.

A woman with back or neck pain might discover that cosmetic surgery offers her a treatment option. Her doctor might tell her that her back or neck pain is caused by the pull of her extra-heavy breasts. A woman with large breasts might not have such pain, but she might have another problem. She might be making repeated visits to a dermatologist about irritated skin in the area under her breast flap. She might then decide to visit a plastic surgeon, expecting the surgical removal of her "problem".

A woman who considers plastic surgery on her breasts needs to obtain all of the specifics about such an operation. Such a woman should be told exactly where the surgeon would be placing the needed incision. Cosmetic surgery on the breasts usually leaves a woman with an unsightly scar on each breast. The surgeon must cut around the areola and down to the bottom of the breast.

Any woman might hesitate to agree to such a procedure. She might wonder if the proposed operation would invite more problems. She would undoubtedly find that she must accept the scar, or do without the breast reduction. The surgeon would plan to draw out unwanted fat and glandular tissue through that incision. The surgeon could also decide to cut away any skin that no longer served a useful function.

Most women can understand why the scarring that results from a breast reduction would seem to be the most fearful consequence of plastic surgery. Unfortunately, that large scar represents only the "tip of the iceberg". A breast reduction could present a woman with one or more unexpected problems.

A surgeon could, for example, choose to actually remove both nipples during part of the procedure. Whenever a surgeon has undertaken to remove the nipples during a breast reduction, then that doctor's surgical skills have been greatly tested. Removal of the nipples during a breast reduction obligates the surgeon to careful replacement of those same nipples.

A woman could associate cosmetic surgery with very unpleasant consequences, if her surgeon failed to honor the above obligation. The breast reduction could then leave the patient with asymmetrical nipples. If the patient wanted to have that mistake corrected, then she would have to agree to more surgery.

The above paragraphs explained the potential visible consequences of a breast reduction. There could also be some unseen consequences. There could be temporary damage to the nerves in the woman's breast. She could find that she would experience a decreased pleasure from any bedroom pursuits that were "scheduled" in the period when her breasts lacked their normal ability to respond to stimuli.
