Habits To Avoid For A Successful Basketball Offense
If you observe successful basketball players, you would notice that these athletes have developed good playing habits. Every basketball player that is just starting to learn the game should be the same. While cultivating good habits, a player should work on getting rid of the bad ones. It may be seem like too simple an advice but the fact is many players find it a challenge to drop their bad habits on the court.
But change can happen if you make an effort towards it. Whether good or bad, habits are formed through constant repetition. So, the key to eliminating bad playing habits is to keep on doing the good ones instead. But a crucial part to this process is identifying what habits you should avoid that are not helping your game or contributing to the team. Here are some of the things players tend to do that they shouldn't:
Forgetting that basketball is a team sport and concentrating more on delivering a good one-on-one offensive. Players who are more focused on their own game obviously compromise the team's success.
Forgetting that they are part of the game. This may sound funny but some players just stand around and watch the game unfold before them, especially when they are not holding the ball. Remember, players should remain involved in the action.
Taking shots without looking if a pass can be made. This works against the team because a team mate could've been open and in a better position to shoot the ball but that chance to score is lost if the person holding the ball does not take the time to quickly scan if there is anyone else he could pass the ball to before shooting.
Failing to come up with different scoring options on a set play. Needless to say, this habit makes for a weak offensive because players are focused on just one option on their play to score. If this one option does lead to a good opportunity to score, then making the pass is a must; but if the option that arises is not going to work, then be flexible and look for alternatives.
Looking at the target or towards the direction of the pass to be made. This is called 'telegraphing a pass', which as you can imagine is like telling everybody to whom or where you intend to throw the ball, something you don't want players on the other team to pick up on. Learn how to fake your moves so you do not give away passes.
Using fake moves that are unfamiliar to the rest of the team. If you're the only one in your team who understands your hand gestures or your feints, then you will just confuse your teammates. Don't try anything new during an actual game. It's better to reserve those for practice.
These are just some of the things that basketball players must work to avoid to ensure their offense is effective.
