A Father's Day Apron You Can Make

By Alan Biron

I know, you are probably thinking that dads don't wear aprons, but this apron will be so cool that he will enjoy wearing it and telling his buddies that his kids made it for him, and he can wear it when he is cooking out on the grill. If you really want to impress him you could buy him one of those tall chef's hats to go along with the apron to wear while he is grilling. Even if he doesn't wear the apron or the chef's hat, he will still enjoy showing them off to his buddies and telling them how his kids made them for him.

The materials you will need for this craft are a solid colored apron, different colors of fabric paint, paper plates, and sponges with designs on them. Your local craft store will have a variety of foam pieces or sponges that already have designs on them, as well as a huge selection of fabric paint to choose from. Wal-Mart of K-Mart will have the aprons and possibly the chef's hat. Remember to have a large clean and dry work space to use for creating this craft.

Remove the apron from its package and lay it out flat on your work space making sure to gently smooth out any wrinkles or creases. Pour a small amount of fabric paint onto the paper plate, a different color on each plate. Place your designed sponge or foam piece into the paint and move it around so that the entire face of the design is covered evenly with paint. Pick a starting place on the apron and press the painted designed sponge or foam piece onto the apron pressing gently. Continue this process until the entire front side of the apron is covered with the painted designs. If you chose to also purchase a chef's hat to go with the apron, you can decorate it in the same manner as you have with the apron. Allow one to two days for the paint to dry completely before wrapping and giving it to your dad to wear.

Of note, if you aren't really sure that you want to use different designs to paint on the apron and chef's hat, you could choose to use one single design and create a pattern across the front of the apron. You could also choose to use letter stencils and paint the names of each child on the front of the apron and then paint dad on the front of the chef's hat. There are many different designs and patterns you could use with this craft so it is just a matter of you deciding how you want to design it.
