A Guitar Players Guide to Purchasing Their Next Electric Guitar

Rock concerts were the rage in the 70's and they pushed numerous kids to buy their very first electric guitars. Today, video games like Rockband are having the same effect.

The core of all heavy rock music doesn't just lie with the words; it also lies with the electric guitar and the various sounds that it can produce. There are so many kids across the block who would give anything to play like Mark Knopfler, Steve Vai, Angus Young etc. These men are not just some of the best guitarists of their times, they are legends.

Now if you are interested in learning how to play the guitar then the first thing you'll need to do is select one. Most people start with an acoustic and graduate to the electric guitar. It is usually quite tedious for someone new to choose the right guitar right off the bat since there are 1000's of brands out there on the market. If you're buying an electric guitar then you will need to also buy an amp, pick-ups, picks, a tuner, perhaps an effects pedal etc.

Electric guitars come in a huge variety of shapes and designs with the aerodynamic designs being one of the hottest. But hold back! Do not go for the first electric guitar you see. You need to look around and check out the prices and vast array of models before you actually go and buy one. In fact, one of the coolest ways to pick a guitar is by the brand or by the style. Here is our take on the four important styles:

Stratocaster (Better known as a 'Strat') - This certainly is a show stealer and has a typical style. The most famous is the red and white color combination, which was shredded extensively by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits. The Strato is from Fender and has a neck that is sturdily attached to the guitar body. Aside from this, it has dual cut away sides, 22 frets accompanied by a tremolo system and 3 pickups. Fender designed the first Strato in the early 50's. Some of the popular designs include:

Telecaster - The Telecaster is another creative guitar from Fenders. It is more than just another guitar; it is more like a complete orchestra. It is a solid body guitar and comprises of twin pick-ups. The first Telecaster was manufactured by Leo Fender in the 40's and has a single cutaway body. It doesn't have the wah wah bar but has two different single-coil pickups. Some of the popular Telecaster models include:

* American Tele HS: $900-$1200 * Standard Telecaster: $450-$500 * 63 Telecaster Relic Solid Body: $2400-$3300 * Fender 72 Telecaster Custom Electric Guitar: $700-$800

Les Paul - This classic electric guitar was designed by Gibson for many of the rock stars of the day. The salient feature of a Gibson Les Paul electric is its set neck construction, which means there are no joints. The body is a single cutaway. It is appointed with dual pickups as well as a raised scratch-plate. If you want to play distorted sound then this great guitar will provide you with a vast range. Some of the legends who use the Les Pauls include Kirk Hammett (Metallica) and Carlos Santana. Some of the famed Les Paul models include:

* Les Paul Custom Electric Guitar: $3050-$3500 * 1959 Les Paul Standard Guitar: $5550-$6050 * Les Paul Vintage Mahogany Guitar: $700-$800 * Les Paul Classic Electric Guitar: $1850-$1950

The Gibson Brand - This is one of the powerhouse brands in all of music and all their models are absolute classics and shoud not be compared to others. Gibson was actually started in 1902 by Orville Gibson and has been singly accountable for providing us some of the best acoustic and electric guitars. A couple of the famous models include the ES-150 electric and the Explorer etc. Some of the legends who have shredded on a Gibson include Ace Frehley (KISS) and Frank Zappa to name a couple. Some of the popular models include:

* Gibson Flying V Electric: $500-$600 * SG 61 Classic Electric Guitar: $1500-$1600 * Faded SG Special Electric Guitar: $550-$600 * Explorer Pro Electric Guitar: $1100-$1200

These are some of the most well known brands of guitars. The other aspects that will help you to pick up a guitar include fretboard, the pick-ups, and the body. Full-bodied electrics are generally favored as they can produce some of the best audio that you will ever get to hear.
