Basic Tips for Junior Bowling

By Jimmy Cox
Jun 22, 2009
More and more youngsters are taking up the sport of bowling. Many of them are learning to bowl through the United States Bowling Congress. Junior bowling is going from strength to strength. This body sanctions bowling leagues for men, women, mixed and youth categories. It also serves as a sanctioning body for High School and Collegiate bowling in the USA, as well as Team USA. Through the USBC program, youngsters are taught to bowl, to have fun and to enjoy the sport of bowling. The bowling activities are also used as a means of training good and responsible citizens.

The program is offered to all boys and girls, 18 years of age and under. I've never had any particular difficulty in teaching youngsters how to bowl. Generally speaking, if a youngster is big enough, he or she can be taught to bowl. I don't change my teaching techniques with youngsters at all; I treat them the same as adults.

The main difference between teaching children and adults is psychology. Nothing else. I stress timing with the younger bowlers and teach them how to throw a straight ball with the thumb held at 12 o'clock as the guide. And with youngsters I stress the importance of making the ball do the work.

As soon as a youngster is able to lift a 10-pound ball, I think he or she is ready to bowl. And I believe in teaching them the four-step delivery to go. Along with the straight ball. There's nothing wrong with impressing the importance of spot bowling as soon as the child finds out how his or her delivery acts. But the real deal is to get the youngster to throwing a straight ball over a spot between the second and third arrows and to stress the importance of smoothness.

There's no reason why in junior bowling the youngsters shouldn't be taught the four-step approach immediately. But instead of trying to burden them with too much knowledge at one time, stress the importance of going over the third arrow and hitting the No. 1 or head pin. Make them realize that speed is unnecessary. Youngsters will learn even faster than adults, perhaps because they're not basically as stubborn.

I've never done anything different in teaching youngsters than in giving lessons to adults, except possibly in what I might say when someone isn't doing what he or she is supposed to do. Teach youngsters the most feasible fundamentals; that means that you teach them the four-step approach, use of a ball with three holes, the conventional grip and a straight ball. It would seem that we had all better guard your laurels against the "bowlers of tomorrow." They'll probably soon be showing each of us a few things.

In a short time, millions of young people and their families have discovered the game that had been around for centuries. They have found bowling a game existing in a clean, wholesome environment, inviting to the whole family. The new bowling centers have fitted the desire of young people for participant rather than a spectator sport.
