Getting Your Dog Ready for Airplane Travel

By John Williams
Jun 22, 2009
Thousands of dogs travel by airplane each year. But if these dogs could talk, they would probable tell you that the never want to repeat that experience ever again. This article will help you prepare your dog for travelling by airplane should it ever be necessary.

Unless your dog is little enough to fit under your seat, they will have to fly in the cargo area of the plane. This is a very upsetting experience for various dogs, and some stress so much that they do not survive it at all. In other dogs it might even lead to some severe behavioral problems, mostly rejection problems.

By doing the following you will prepare your dog adequately for the journey ahead:
1. Get your dog used to their crate. If your dog is not crate trained, get a crate quite a few weeks prior to the trip, and allow them to get used to it.
2. Get your dog used to motion while in the crate. As soon as your dog is at ease in the crate, close the door and carry it around, should they be small enough. If you are unable to lift it, just slide it around. Also do a few short car trips. This will help to decrease a bit of the stress of what they will experience at the airport.

3. Introduce your dog to noise. To get your dog used to some of the unknown noises that they will experience, create a tape of airplane engine sounds. Play this to them softly, and then increase the volume as your dog gets used to it. Airplane sounds can be very loud, and tremendously upsetting to dogs.
4. Sedate your dog. If you feel that your dog is scared of air travel you can always get a mild sedative from your vet.

5. Immunization. Make sure that your dog has had all their needed inoculations.
6. Always have the leash of your dog on hand. Always have the leash for your dog with you, as you will be able to walk your dog should there be an extended holdup.

7. Do not give your dog any food or water before flying. Your dog should not get any food for 6 hours before the flight. Water should be withheld for 2 hours before the flight.

8. Give your dog sufficient time to relieve them before the flight. Do not hurry your dog before they get a chance to go. By doing this your dog may soil them before arriving at their next destination.
10. Provide your dog with distractions. Put some of their favorite toys or blankets in the crate. You can also put in a worn piece of clothing as this will also offer them some form of comfort.

11. After arriving, get your dog before you get your luggage. Give them a special treat and see if there is a place where you can take your dog to relive themselves.
