If you are hosting a big event and need to be heard, then you are definitely going to be concerned about the type of microphones and audio equipment you will need to rent. There are many kinds, of course, and a quality audio equipment supplier will be able to offer great advice on what might be best for you. But it's always good to approach renting equipment from a position of knowledge, so here are some of the basics about the different types of microphones on the market today.

Dynamic microphones

For the lay person, a dynamic microphone is most easily recognized by the bulbous appearance of its large metallic head. It is the most versatile of the three basic microphone designs and so it is the most commonly used type in large audience situations. It is not known for reproducing sound completely accurately or clearly, but when loudness is a priority then it works great. You will want to choose a cordless variety if you or the performer you have hired plan on walking about the stage or going out into the audience. Not having cables also minimizes the chances of accidental trips or other related mishaps. A dynamic microphone is generally a great choice for those on a budget since they are relatively inexpensive to rent.

Ribbon microphones

Ribbon microphones are long and cylindrical and serve very specific purposes. The audio signals that emanate from a ribbon mike come from the delicate vibrations of a thin foil ribbon in the mechanism that come as a response to sound waves from a voice. This device reproduces sound beautifully but it is also delicate as compared to a dynamic microphone. If it is dropped or bumped it can be easily damaged, so it is not usually the mike of choice in the context of big public events.

Condenser microphones

Condenser mikes combine the technologies and features of the dynamic and the ribbon. Its head is smaller than a dynamic's but larger than a ribbon's. It reproduces sound much better than a dynamic but does not have the fragility of a ribbon. Because the sound quality is so high, the wireless version of this particular microphone is a favorite with those who sing in public and need to be heard at the back of a room. The sound is clean and clear and listeners can pick up every detail and every nuance.

Make sure to consult with the audio rental company to be certain that the mikes you choose to use for your event will be the very best for your special day or evening.
