NFL Tickets - The Vick Factor
Michael Vick is officially a free man - in the NFL, at least. The Atlanta Falcons released the former all-star quarterback from the team's roster this week, giving the other 31 teams in the league the chance to sign the infamous Vick and his baggage for the 2009 football season. Vick has been out of the league since 2007, when he was convicted of running a dogfighting ring and sentenced to 23 months in federal prison. Now that he's been released from prison and let go by the Falcons, the QB is looking for a fresh start - the only questions now are where and when that journey will begin for the former convict, who has already begun a long trail of mea culpas.
While Vick's release from the Atlanta Falcons earlier this week gave him the freedom to sign with another team in the league, he still has a long way to go before football season starts this year if he wants to see playing time. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has yet to reinstate Vick into the league after suspending him indefinitely in 2007, and it's still unclear whether or not Goodell will give him the green light to getting back onto the football field in '09. The commissioner recently said that he wants Vick to show remorse for his actions concerning the dogfighting convictions before he'll reinstate the QB into the league, and even if Vick is approved by Goodell, he still has to find a team that will let him play.
Several teams around the league have already issued statements saying they'd pass on signing Michael Vick to a contract this season because of his extra baggage, and even Jim Mora, Seattle Seahawks coach and Vick's former coach with the Falcons, said he wouldn't make a deal with Vick, making a statement saying, "We have no intentions of adding a quarterback to our roster." Other teams who are reported to have no interest in signing Vick include the San Francisco 49ers, Washington Redskins, Dallas Cowboys, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Detroit Lions, St. Louis Rams and New York Jets. On the other hand, there are still several teams left around the league who would likely jump at the chance to sign such a stellar player to their rosters, and among the front-runners for a shot with Michael Vick include the New England Patriots, Jacksonville Jaguars, New Orleans Saints, Baltimore Ravens and Oakland Raiders.
Though Michael Vick is a quarterback by training, his versatility allows him to move throughout the offense, receiving and rushing with the best of players. For this reason, the former Falcons QB could be a valuable asset to most any team in the league should the team be able to overlook his baggage and a likely public relations nightmare resulting from his dogfighting days. One of these teams that could do so and with an unmatchable fervor are the New England Patriots, as coach Bill Belichick has been known for turning around the careers of several disgruntled veterans over the years.
Vick could be the perfect option for the Patriots as a backup QB now that Matt Cassel is gone and Tom Brady is back, and his flexibility in the Wildcat scheme could also make him a valuable addition to the Patriots' offense, which already includes all-stars Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Joey Galloway, Laurence Maroney, Fred Taylor and Kevin Faulk. Will Vick fit in with the New England Patriots or with another team in the league this season? Regardless of league commissioner Roger Goodell's decision concerning Michael Vick, NFL tickets are still available from online for the upcoming season, so don't miss a game!
