MLB Tickets - Vegas Banking on the Yankees

By Brent Warnken
Jun 24, 2009
The house doesn't always win, but they sure don't lose often. While examples of Las Vegas bookies losing significant amounts money on championship sports betting exist (such as the Giants' unlikely win over the Patriots in the 2008 Super Bowl), the odds makers generally know what they're doing and they generally take in a huge profit every year. That's why Yankees fans ought to be plenty happy about the way things are looking right now. As of May 22, 2009, the New York Yankees have the best odds in Major League Baseball at winning the World Series.

New York Yankees:
According to Vegas dotcom, the New York Yankees started out this season at 9/1 odds to win the whole thing, slightly behind the Dodgers and the Angels, who started off 2009 with 8/1 odds at winning the world championship. If you take a futures bet on the Yankees right now, however, you'll probably fetch only about four dollars to every one you put up. Why is this? Well, the Yankees gained some good players over the offseason- mainly Mark Teixeira and CC Sabathia. There were questions as to whether the Yankees would get the most out of their star slugger, Alex Rodriguez, but those have for the most part been put to rest. Even though the Yanks started out relatively slow they've bounced back and are just a couple of games out of first place in the American League East as of June 17, 2009.

If you want to make the most money possible on a futures bet, you might want to go with another team besides the Yankees. Currently there are a few teams out there fielding pretty fair returns at this point. Here are some of the highlights:

Milwaukee Brewers:
The Brew Crew are fielding 30 to 1 odds as of May 22, and that's some pretty substantial profitability. The Brewers have a couple of good things going for them. As of June 17, 2009 Milwaukee is winning the NL Central with a 36-29 record, one game up on the St. Louis Cardinals (who are taking substantially less lucrative odds at 12/1). The Brewers are fourth in the NL in runs scored and second in total home runs, so they have one of the most potent offenses in the league. However, they're going to need help in the pitching department to really get in the running for a world championship. Currently the Brewers have a 4.30 team ERA, which is just middle-of-the-pack. If you catch wind of a trade deal that will land a premier ace in Milwaukee, try to get in on this team before the odds change.

Philadelphia Phillies:
The Phillies have been selling huge amounts of MLB tickets online because they're the reigning World Series champions and they have pretty much the exact same offense that got them to the championship last year. The only problem is, like the Brewers, their starters aren't coming through. Cole Hamels and Jamie Moyer just aren't where they were in 2008. The Phillies started out with 12-1 odds, but dropped to 16-1. If you think the Phillies will improve or trade for another member of the rotation, this bet makes sense.
