Kansas City Wizards Tickets - Coaches Help Push Team to Wins

By Brent Warnken
Jun 25, 2009
The Kansas City Wizards are fighting hard to get themselves to the playoffs this season, and much of the credit to their success is going to their players. After 14 games, the Wizards are ranked third in the Eastern conference with a record of 5-5-4, and four out of their five wins have been shutouts. Top scorers like Josh Wolff, Davy Arnaud, Claudio Lopez and Aaron Hohlbein have been tallying a slew of goals for the Wizards, and goalkeeper Kevin Hartman has been a force in goal for the team. There are other people, however, who deserve just as much credit. The coaching staff of the Kansas City Wizards has been working hard all season and even in the offseason to make the Wizards competitive, and these coaches are worth knowing a little more about. Fans can see these coaches during the Wizards' games with Kansas City Wizards tickets found online.

Curt Onalfo, Head Coach: Onalfo brings soccer experience from around the world to the Wizards. He was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil but eventually moved to the United States. He was an All-American in high school before choosing to go to Virginia for college. He started playing with the Under-20 U.S. Men's National Team in 1987. His professional career started in 1991 in France.

From there, he moved to playing in Mexico. In 1996, he started playing in the MLS with the Los Angeles Galaxy. He played in the MLS until 1999 and also spent time on the 1992 Olympic team. He started as an assistant coach and other positions with D.C. United after ending his playing days. Along with coaching in the MLS, he has been the assistant coach of the U.S. Men's National Team since 2003.

Kris Kelderman, Assistant Coach: Kelderman played with Onalfo when both were at Virginia during the late 1980s and early 1990s. His time as a playing star started before that when he was part of the 1985 Youth World Cup. He eventually worked his way to the MLS and started playing with D.C. United, where he won two championships. He also was on the rosters of the New England Revolution and Miami Fusion before he retired. Before working with the Wizards, he was a coach at George Mason University.

Kerry Zavagnin, Assistant Coach: This season marks Zavagnin's first as a coach, but not his first with the Wizards. Since 2000, he has played midfielder with the Wizards and even brought them to an MLS Cup championship. Prior to his time with the Wizards, he played with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. He has earned 21 caps with the U.S. Men's National Team and scored one assist with the USMNT.

John Pascarella, Goalkeeping/Fitness Coach: John Pascarella has a long coaching and playing career. He played professionally in Peru before joining the A- League and then the MLS with the Los Angeles Galaxy in the mid 1990s. He started coaching with Maryland in 1998 as an assistant coach. He has also worked with the Virginia ODP program and PDL's Northern Virginia Royals.
