Philadelphia Eagles Tickets - McNabb Gets New Contract
Donovan McNabb got a big raise last week. In a 14-minute news conference the former Syracuse star not only discussed his reworked contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, but also mentioned winning the Super Bowl. The five-time Pro Bowl quarterback told the press it's important for the Eagles to focus on what they have to do in order to win the Super Bowl. McNabb and the Eagles reached an agreement to restructure the final two years of his contract. The associated press is reporting that the quarterback will receive $24.5 million over the next two years. That's a $5.3 million raise over two seasons. The elusive quarterback made it clear last season that he wanted a new deal. Get Philadelphia Eagles tickets and see McNabb rush for a touchdown.
Coach Andy Reid told the press that both sides wanted to get something done. He added that there are very few players far along in their career that warrant a new contract. The Eagles' organization felt McNabb was in that situation. Both McNabb and the Eagles agreed on a raise instead of extending the 32-year-old quarterback's contract since the NFL's collective bargaining agreement will expire after the 2010 season. Although McNabb may not be thinking about retirement, he knows the window of opportunity can close really quickly in the NFL, especially with third-year pro Kevin Kolb waiting to take over as starter. McNabb stated that in the next two seasons, his focus is to bring Philadelphia a Super Bowl and feels confident that he can get the job done with the team he has.
The Eagles have come close to the Super Bowl in McNabb's 10 seasons with Philadelphia. He led his team to the NFC championship game five times, including last season. They advanced to the big dance once with McNabb leading the charge at quarterback, but lost to the New England Patriots in 2005. This year is probably the best chance Philadelphia has at winning the Super Bowl; the Eagles scored a franchise-record 416 points last year and added three explosive weapons on offense for the 2009-2010 season. They drafted wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, running back LeSean McCoy and tight end Cornelius Ingram. The Eagles also picked up two-time Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters and signed offensive lineman Stacy Andrews.
When reporters asked McNabb to assess the new offense line, the quarterback said it was difficult at this point but he believes everyone looks good. Many Eagles fans probably thought they would never see McNabb suit up for Philadelphia's 2009-2010 season after Reid benched the quarterback for the first time in his career during halftime of a 10-7 game against the Baltimore Ravens. The Eagles were routed 36-7 in that contest, but McNabb returned in the next game against the Arizona Cardinals and proved he was a versatile quarterback. He helped his team make the playoffs and took them to the NFC title game after two huge road victories against the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Giants. McNabb took the blame for losing the NFC title game against the Cardinals because he played a very poor first half.
