Basketball has been one of the most sought out games that is being played ranging from the youth to the elderly. This team sport is a fast paced game that keeps your adrenaline pumping the entire time you're playing this sport. Many people play this game for recreation and just have fun. But to others this game can be too confusing because of the many rules any regulations. Here is a guide to help you further understand the great game of basketball.

This team sport requires two teams, which have five active players playing on the court, to score points against the opponent under specified and organized rules. Usually, the tallest player on court will be considered as the center or any of the two forwards. The smallest and/or the fastest player would be in the guard positions. By throwing the ball through a 10-foot high hoop points are scored for the team. A successful shot can either be two points or three points. It is only considered a three point shot if you are beyond the three-point arc.

The game is divided into four quarters, ten or twelve minutes each. Two minutes are allowed for breaks/time outs during the game and fifteen minutes is allotted for the half time break. There are only a limited number of time outs given for the game. After half time, teams switch goals. When overtime occurs each period is five minutes long. There is a 24-second timer when the game is in play. It is stopped when play is not on going. It takes much longer complete the game since there are a lot of pauses to the game.

The team consists of a twelve-player roster. During the game substitutions can be made, but only when the play is stopped. The coach is the person who develops strategies and the progress of team. With the help of assistant coaches, managers, trainers, doctors, and statisticians, improvement will surely be achieved.

A pair of shorts and jersey should be uniform for the team. The jerseys should have a visible number, which nobody else on the team has, and must be printed in the front and back of the uniform. High-top rubber shoes are what players often wear since they give extra support to the ankle.

Officials, who consist of one crew chief, one or two referees, and table officials manage the game. They make sure that players strictly follow the rules and make sure the game is played fair. The total number of referees on the court is three. The table officials are the ones who record the team scoring, individual fouls, timekeeping, shot clock, team possession arrow, and player substitutions.

This may be a lot to take in but once you fully understand the basic rules of this game, fun will surely be present in this activity. Watching or blogging about basketball is definitely enticing but there is no other feeling like actually playing the game. But if you think doing a Michael Jordan is not your thing, you can do what Henry Abbott, Ryan McNeill, Sherman Mazur and the rest can probably do - blog about it!
