NFL Tickets - NFC North Preview
Minnesota Vikings: The Vikings are coming off a 2008 campaign in which they won the division but were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. The major question mark with this team lies at the quarterback position. As of June 15th, we're still not sure whether Brett Favre is going to return to the NFL to play with the Vikings. That leaves Tavaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels as the potential starters that are currently on the roster. Jackson has shown flashes that could mean he'll be a good quarterback in the future, but he's still wildly inconsistent as this juncture. The only thing he's been consistent at is drawing the ire of Vikings fans.
But head coach Brad Childress has been extremely loyal to Jackson since drafting him in the second round a few years back, and it's likely that the team moves forward with him when the season begins. Rosenfels could be a better option, though. He's shown the tendency to try to do too much with the football, resulting in turnovers in similar fashion to Jackson, but I think that he's more capable of playing under control than Jackson at this point. With a stable running game that features Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor, Rosenfels wouldn't feel the pressure to make too many things happen on his own and could simply make the reads and throws that are asked of him.
Chicago Bears: The addition of quarterback Jay Cutler will certainly help sell NFL tickets, but the question is how much better he will make this team's offense. He and running back Matt Forte look to be two of the best young players at their respective positions in the entire league and could help lead this offense for years to come. The Bears, however, do not have the most accomplished receiving corps. Devin Hester is still adjusting to his role in the offense, Rashied Davis has only shown flashes at this point and Juaquin Iglesias is an unproven rookie. Tight end Greg Olsen, who Cutler has reportedly developed a good relationship with off the field, will probably be looked to a lot by the team's new franchise signal caller. If this offense can get rolling and the defense can play decently, the Bears could make a run at the NFC North title.
Green Bay Packers: The Packers had a tough season in 2008, but that was no fault of quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers played magnificently in his first season as a starter. The team features a lot of weapons on offense, including wide receivers Greg Jennings, Donald Driver and James Jones, as well as running backs Ryan Grant and Brandon Jones. It's not the offense that will determine how high the Pack can climb in the standings, though, it will be the defense. The Packers made a point to address defense in the draft this offseason, acquiring both Boston College defensive tackle B.J. Raji and USC linebacker Clay Matthews in the first round. If the Packers can improve their defense enough, this offense could carry them to the postseason.
Detroit Lions: This year is all about getting back on track for the Lions. Fresh off a winless season, the team drafted their franchise quarterback in Matthew Stafford. While Stafford won't likely be under center opening day, he will eventually get some playing time later in the season. The team has to be careful not to put too much on his plate too soon, while still giving him the opportunity to gain valuable experience. The franchise is looking to change the culture in Detroit and will be working hard all season to make positive strides on every level.
