Denver Broncos Tickets - Kyle Orton Will Start at QB
Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniels selected Kyle Orton to be starting quarterback for the team last week. Orton had been battling with Chris Simms this offseason for the starting position after former starter Jay Cutler was sent to the Chicago Bears. McDaniels liked how Orton adapted to the offense over the past few months, but stressed there was still time for Simms to take the number one spot. The coach informed his starting quarterback that he will be taking all the snaps behind the first-team offensive line during last Saturday's practice. He told the press that there is a lot that they expect out of their quarterbacks, and Kyle seemed to grasp the offensive scheme quicker than Chris. The coach continued to say he put both of his quarterbacks in a pressure situation, where one of them has to keep his job and the other has to fight for it. Just because Orton will start at QB does not mean the competition with Simms is over. Nothing is ever determined in June. The Denver Broncos just wrapped up a second day of a three-day minicamp at the team's Dove Valley headquarters. In the 2008-2009 season, Orton completed 272 of 465 passes for 2,812 yards with the Chicago Bears. He also threw for 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. The quarterback has only appeared in 33 games during his three-year NFL career. Just like Simms, Orton has adjusted to a new team and offense; the difference was that Kyle displayed less rust than his teammate.
Perhaps Simms' performance was not as great as Orton's because he has not played since week three of the 2006 season. The quarterback had complications from a ruptured spleen while playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Orton, who was a key piece to the Cutler deal, stated he's really excited to be the number one QB for the Broncos. He added that it was just the beginning for him in Denver's offense and he hopes to continue to get better every day until he is 100 percent in sync with the offence. One of his goals is to get the offense where it needs to be come opening day of the 2009-2010 season. Orton also revealed he has been trying to find a comfort level in McDaniels' offense.
Just like other quarterbacks, Orton has good and bad plays during practice. For example, he threw two interceptions, which cornerback Jack William and outside linebacker Robert Ayers ran back for a score. However, he also delivered a perfect sideline pass into the arms of rookie running back Knowshon Moreno in tight coverage. Simms had nothing but positive words to describe Orton; he said the starting QB is extremely underrated. Whether it was in college or with the Chicago Bears, Orton was underrated. Simms went on to say that his teammate throws the ball well and that he is very smart. The former Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB was not surprised that McDaniels decided to make his decision public now instead of waiting until training camp. Simms said they both cannot be the starter for the Broncos.
