Due to the moisture, humidity, and temperature differences in our basements, deciding what to put on the floor can be a bit of a challenge. However, there are several different options you can choose that will make the space comfortable and pleasing to the eye while still resisting all of these common problems. Here, we'll compare wood flooring, laminate floor, tile floors, and a few different materials and ideas you can try.

Cement Floors

Since most basements have cement already, it's simply a matter of getting rid of that dingy grey color. Therefore, one of the easiest and most effective ways to solve this problem is to simply paint over it with a specialized paint. This doesn't make it any warmer on the feet, and will need to be repainted often as paint will likely peel off in high traffic areas, but it is a great way to add some color quickly and will clean easily. For an added feel of comfort, add area rugs to the spaces you spend time in such as in front of the couch or in a toy room.

Wood Flooring and Bamboo Flooring

Wood flooring is another excellent idea for basements. While you may assume the moisture would be a problem, if you choose the right underlayment with a moisture barrier, you will have a durable, beautiful floor that lasts for a long time. Bamboo is also a great option. Bamboo flooring is highly resistant to moisture, staining, and are far more comfortable on your feet.

If you like the look of wood, but are worried about the price and installation, consider laminate floor products. This material looks just like real hardwood without the cost. In fact, both bamboo and laminate floor products are extremely affordable, durable, and easy to install.

Tile Floors

Tile floors provide you with lots options for your basement. Marble, ceramic, mosaic, porcelain, and natural stone are just a few of the materials to choose from. You can also select non-traditional interior materials such as terracotta and sealed pavers. If you are unsure about using a specific material, ask a tile floors specialists. As an added benefit, you can lay these materials on a diagonal angle to make the room feel larger.

If you're worried about these floors being cold, you can fix that with affordable in-floor heating. This simple system is installed under the tile and is virtually undetectable except for the warmth under your feet. You can control it with a thermostat like any other heating system and can turn it off in the summer to keep your basement cool.

When we don't feel comfortable in a space or find a room uninspiring, we spend less time in the space. With a floor covering that makes you feel at home, whether laminate floor, wood flooring, or tile floors, you can easily improve the look of the space and make it one of your favorite rooms in the house.
