Taking photos is a fantastic way to capture moments in your life, unfortunately most people never get round to the most rewarding part of photography, printing the images out! Creating photo books for special occasions is a great way to keep all of your favourite images in a safe and presentable place. Great on coffee tables and bookcases, photo books are brilliant to show off to both friends and family. Here in this article we look at some top tips to help you take better quality pictures to add to your photo books!

When taking family photos before you gather everyone together, find a location that is going to be suitable for your shot. Choose a place with natural lighting and with plenty of space, so for large family shots outside is the ideal place. Hopefully the weather will be great and add to the overall tone of your family, a lovely sunny day is the perfect background.

Try to select a simple background for your photo, as a cluttered photo can take away the focus from the most important part of your photo, your family. Once you have found a good location try to find flattering lighting that will enhance your picture. No one wants a family photo with everyone squinting in it, have all of your subjects face away from the sun and try to position your family members so that the light source is behind or slightly to the side of them.

Experiment with angles, photo books look far interesting when the cameraman has tried new ways of capturing the family. Stand on a chair or stepladder and take photos of you looking down on the group, this is usually a really flattering angle for faces and their body. One trick to make your photos better is to try and make your family positions more natural, position people in non-conventional positions or let them do what they feel most comfortable with. They are your family photos and they don't need to look strict, it's lovely to see a family looking relaxed.

When posing your subjects try to get all of their eyes on different levels, this creates a dynamic family photo and is definitely interesting to look at. Also encourage interaction between the family members; some of the best photos capture interactions, such as a small nudge or an arm over the shoulder. This will stop your photo from looking too staged and will look lovely and natural in photo books.
