Confederations Cup Reaches Its Finale
One more week of excitement remains in the Confederations Cup before the football tournament concludes. The competition has reached its semi final stage after the exciting group rounds. Apart from the hosts South Africa who qualified by the skin of their teeth, the other three teams will be the United States, Brazil and Spain.
While the host country's fans will definitely hope that their team can win the trophy, they have more realistic ambitions. South Africa will dare to dream and are now targeting a place in the finals. The odds of that happening will be low, but the players will give their all.
What prevents them from getting ahead of themselves is the team that stands in their way of the final. Brazil will be the biggest obstacle for the South Africans in recent memory. And what an obstacle they will be after destroying every team they faced in Group B.
Brazil are overwhelming favourites to get past South Africa with ease. There seems to be much harmony within the team while their head coach Dunga appears to have struck on a winning formula. Previously lazy players like Robinho are also playing with greater intensity and teamwork.
The United States are the weakest team amongst the four semi finalists. In fact, many attribute their appearance in the last four as something based on luck. There was indeed a hint of good fortune in the way they achieved the improbable against all odds.
The positive momentum would be much needed if they wish to get the better of Spain in the last four. The European champions have been on a rampage for almost three years and that was the last time they saw defeat. With the limitless supply of talent in their pool, it could be another three years before they get beaten again.
Everyone expects to see both Brazil and Spain meeting in the final to determine the best team in the world for the next year. There will be much at stake apart from pride and winners medals. Brazil have sought redemption for their last World Cup failure, while Spain want to show that their European triumph was no fluke.
It would also be a dream final for football fans worldwide if the two make their way to the final as expected. Both are synonymous with attacking flair and entertaining football. It can only be a perfect advertisement for the sport and something that might be repeated in the World Cup finals next year.
