Appropriate Internet Usage At Your Job
Do you find yourself surfing the web while you are sitting at your desk at work? Many people are guilty of doing a little online shopping or checking their personal email during the work day. Many people are unsure how much time is too much when it comes to personal internet usage.
Before you purchase your next online item or check your next work email it is important that you follow these guidelines:
Know the Policy - Most companies have strict policies on Internet use. Take the time to find out if there is a written policy for your company. However, there are companies that do not have a written policy against personal Internet usage yet it is still discouraged.
If your company does not have a policy on personal Internet usage it is still a good idea to keep it to a minimum. If your employer continuously observers your on the web they will begin to assume that you do not have enough work to do and your position may be re evaluated. Although many companies allow for a small amount of personal Internet usage, it should stay at a minimal as you are getting paid to work and not check your emails.
In Addition to personal Internet use, many companies also have policies regarding the forwarding of off-colored jokes through work emails and to co-workers. Doing this could break your companies sexual harassment policies. Therefore, even if you determine that your company does not have a strict Internet policy, you still still not be using it inappropriately at work.
We all know when you surf the web you leave an imprint of the places you visited. Additionally, many companies use software to track their employees internet usage. The same thing goes for personal emails that you send from your work computer. You should assume that any email being sent from your work computer may end up in front of someone you did not intend to see it so practice caution when sending your emails. It is important to remember that you can be putting your job at risk by doing a little online shopping or sending the off-colored joke to your list of friends.
It is important to be aware that even if your company does not inform you about monitoring your Internet usages, it does not mean they are not doing it.
