A Guide To Pairing Kitchen Flooring With Your Kitchen Theme

Designing a kitchen style can be a lot of fun -- choosing the countertop, cabinets and appliances. When doing your planning, however, don't forget to consider your flooring options. Selecting a floor that compliments your overall decorating theme can be instrumental in creating a cohesive look. Here are three trendy kitchen style ideas that take the work out of selecting the right material.

Old World Italian Style

Italy and other countries in the Mediterranean have a unique style that creates a warm and welcoming space. If you'd like to recreate this look in your kitchen, select oversized tiles that look very much like a natural material you'd find outdoors. Unglazed terracotta tile flooring, marble in a warm color scheme, and Italian ceramic squares are all stunning and work well with the other materials and colors you'll add to this style of kitchen. Add dark cabinets and natural marble countertops, and you'll have a room that rivals those in a magazine.

The Country Kitchen

Country-style flooring can have one of two different looks: formal, French influence, or a rustic romantic style. For a more romantic country look and a slightly more formal feel, consider tile flooring. Porcelain or ceramic tile flooring with a matte or eggshell finish will both work well. You'll also find them to be extremely durable. In fact, since the color goes all the way through, porcelain will keep its new look significantly longer and won't show any chips or cracks. If you use laminate floors, choose a brick style pattern.

For a rustic or antique style kitchen, look for rustic hardwood floors or laminate floors. There are options with unique knots and mineral streaks, or you can choose distressed hardwood floors for a lived-in look. Regardless of the material you choose, look for warm tones in a neutral color for a warm country kitchen look.

Modern Flooring Styles

If you enjoy a clean, contemporary style, try modern materials that minimize the number of lines or patterns. Painted or tinted paint is one common choice and virtually maintenance free. Bamboo floors or cork floors are also quite popular -- as well as warm and water resistant, which is essential for a kitchen!

Vinyl or laminate floors are another choice that compliments modern decor. However, when selecting this material, look for solid colors or simple lines and a scuff resistant coating. Tile flooring can also lend to a modern style, but look for large tiles with small grout lines.

Recreating the look and feel of your favorite style isn't as difficult as you might think. Tile flooring, hardwood floors, or laminate floors can all work to help bring your theme together.
