Smith Mountain Lake - Paradise Awaits You
Smith Mountain Lake is a beautiful vacation resort in Virginia. It offers many fun outdoor activities. This is a great way to introduce the family to the great outdoors and still take advantage of a few home comforts. Smith Mountain Lake was formed in 1960. Appalachian Power created a dam at Smith Mountain Gap on the Roanoke River. In 1966 the dam was completed. The initial piece of land was donated by the same company to make a State Park in 1967. Smith Mountain Lake resort was created when the state of Virginia bought more land over the following 6 years. Finally in 1983 the resort was made available to the public.
Activities: There are many water activities that can be enjoyed at Smith Mountain Lake. There are special areas for swimming, which are open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. You should call ahead for the last few weeks of August, as many of the staff have to return to school during this time. Smith Mountain Lake offers other water activities which are also open during this period. It also offers fishing but you will have to obtain a state fishing license for this activity. Unfortunately at Smith Mountain Lake there are no horses available, but there are many miles of exciting hiking trails to explore. There are also a number of bike trails.
Accommodation: At Smith Mountain Lake there are a variety of cabins to accommodate you and your family. They come in various sizes and prices. This means that there is something for everyone. Pets are allowed for a small fee, so you can enjoy Smith Mountain Lake with your favorite hunting dog. There are kitchen and bathroom facilities, plus TV and cable. This will allow you to relax in comfort after a long day of activities.
Camping facilities: there are tent sites with grills for cooking at Smith Mountain Lake. There are even hot showers and places to wash dishes, so it is not as rugged as many camping sites. These tent sites are all situated in the woods allowing you to enjoy the great outdoors and natural beauty of Smith Mountain Lake.
Special events: it is wise to look at the calendar of events, before vacationing at this resort. There are many events scheduled throughout the year and calendars are available online. Smith Mountain Lake also has a visitors' center where you can see presentations about the local folk lore and history of the site and learn about the aquatic environment.
More activities: there are a number of kids' activities scheduled at Smith Mountain Lake. These include; Junior Naturalists and hay rides. There are special canoe trips, twilight programs, interpretive programs and workshops.
There is something for everybody at Smith Mountain Lake. It is a wonderful place to take the family or just a partner.
