More People Selling Jewelry in Weak Economy

By Josh Whitford
Jun 30, 2009
You may have considered selling some of your old jewelry for some extra cash in this poor economy. Some kinds of jewelry people often consider selling are luxury jewelry, gold jewelry, diamond jewelry or high-end watches.

There are even full businesses that generate around selling and buying old jewelry. The reason it's popular to sell old jewelry is because of the instant profit that is usually cash. People are willing to trade in their watches, rings or necklaces for cash, even if they aren't getting the best deal.

So if you are considering selling any of your old high-end jewelry, make sure you are educated about the process so you don't get taken advantage of. Just because you can make instant cash doesn't mean it's a good deal. Take your time to find the right buyer so you get the full worth of that jewelry.

And don't wait until the last minute to sell your jewelry because then you'll be really desperate and will take what you can get. You might even make the poor decision of selling something with sentimental value. You don't want to have regrets down the road. You will never be able to get mom's diamond engagement ring back or Grandpa's gold watch or your great aunt's set of pearls.

It's probably best to find a company that has high standards for buying and selling used jewelry. They will have a reputation to uphold. But some random person will not care about that as much. He or she will only be looking out for himself or herself.

You don't even have to have the highest quality jewelry if you want to resell something. There are people out there looking for jewelry that is not necessarily thousands of dollars but only a few hundred. If you sell several pairs of diamond earrings, it could be worth it for you.

Of course, it's not going to be easy to find a buyer you can trust, even if it is a larger company. More and more people are complaining about jewelry dealers, scams and dishonesty. Sometimes prices are not fair. Sometimes the dealer says the jewelry is something that it is not.

The dealer could lie about the age of the jewelry, the brand or even the metal or gem itself. It's always a good idea to get a second opinion. You can also browse online at luxury jewelry websites for another opinion.

For the most part, though, jewelry companies are going to want to keep their good reputation, and are going to want to make you happy by giving you the best deal possible. They want to keep you as a customer and they want you to tell others about your good experience working with them. Who knows, maybe you will have more jewelry to sell in the future.

New styles of jewelry are popping up all the time, but there is always someone interested in the more vintage pieces, the antique jewelry and your classic diamond necklaces and gold watches.
