Advantages of Working in the Public Sector in the UK

As a public sector employee, you will be employed by the government, whether at a central administrative level as a public servant, or at a municipal local council level, such as a teacher.

The types of jobs available within the public sector vary vastly, from working for a public-facing organisation, such as a National Gallery, to being a town planner, state solicitor, or a police officer. Finance, health and social care, science and technology - public sector fields are plentiful.

Government-owned also means part or wholly publicly-funded through taxation, meaning public sector organisations are not a commercial endeavour for private gains. As a result, many key decisions about funding and spending within public sector organisations will be made at government level.

The advantages and benefits of working in the public sector can be numerous and rewarding. While some may believe the private sector boasts all the job perks and benefits, you'd be wrong; it's possible to find an attractive package of work and pay benefits when working in the public sector, not least immense job satisfaction working for the people within your community, whether directly or indirectly.

Benefits for public sector employees have been improved by the 2007 Pay and Workforce Strategy, which states that pay and reward structures should be aimed to attract, retain and develop skilled and valuable employees. Because of this, should public sector employers look to recruit from the private sector, benefits must be in place to reward personnel sufficiently. So people coming from the private sector and a world of big bonuses, while they may not be met with the same financial reward system in the public domain, they could be pleasantly surprised by the benefit package on offer nonetheless.

Job benefits available within the public sector can far outweigh the immediate attraction of financial reward. Advantages can include flexible working hours and job sharing, sabbaticals, even careers breaks. Hours of work can very often be reduced or flexed up with a combination of in-office and at-home working, which can be desirable for individuals with young children, helping to strike the right work life balance.

If you're a working parent, you could enjoy the benefits of on-site crèche facilities and childcare vouchers, free private healthcare for you and your family, and even free sports and fitness facilities, which put wellness at the heart of public sector employment.

Stress management is also addressed by public sector employment benefits, with regular wellness appraisals available with some employers.

For the long term, pensions too within the public sector can often be generous and are widely regarded as some of the safest in the job market, meaning your position within the public sector could be secure, for life.
