Life Security During A Recession

By Craig Calvin
Jun 30, 2009
In an uncertain financial climate it is very common for people to worry about unemployment. If you have already lost your job you face the long road to re-employment and if you are still employed you worry about job security. In fact, when the news is constantly hammering us with images of factory closings, Wall Street volatility and budget cutbacks our nervousness is understandable. The key to negotiating uncertain times is to keep from being controlled by our fears and worries. Worry never solved a problem but just knowing that does not stop this most natural of human reactions. How do we control our worries so that they don't spiral out of control and immobilize us?

Managing the Worry

The first thing you should do is look at your situation and create a list on ways that you can take action and prepare for any changes that may come in your life. Even if these action prove to be useless, down the line, working on them now will make you feel more at ease and will relieve you of stress and the worry of not knowing whats ahead. For example, even though you are currently employed, this may be a good time to review your resume, polish it up a little and maybe even take a training course or two. This will put you a step in front of the rest, should you lose you job and are required to find new employment.

Opening A New Door

Have you ever heard the old saying, when one door closes, another door opens? This saying is also true when referring to the business world. Although recessions have devastating effects on unemployment rates and businesses, many new ideas tend to be born and put into action. These new ideas can be something as simple as restructuring that will allow for new growth at an existing company, or extended training and refocusing. No matter, these actions during an economic downturn will pay greatly when the economy begins to rise back up again.

Take Stock, Take Action.

We may not have any control over the economy but one thing we do have control over is the step that we can take to prepare ourselves for all sorts of possibilities. One way to prepare ourselves is by learning new techniques that can make us more effective and valuable in our current companies. No matter what the economic situation, having these skills will make you more attractive to prospective employers. It is also important that our resumes reflect our skills and experiences adequately. By taking the proper steps, you will be able to lay your head on your pillow at night and fall asleep, leaving the sleepless nights behind you forever!
