Be Prepared for that Summer Motorcycle Road Trip

By Art Gib
Jun 30, 2009
Although it may be tempting to just put a backpack together, and get out and hit the open road this summer, it's probably not a good idea. Even the most seasoned road warrior knows that a successful road trip requires a large measure of planning in order to be safe and memorable. Here are some ideas for how to be prepared for that summer motorcycle road trip.

Get the Bike Ready

-- Make sure that all parts of the chassis are intact and in good condition, including the chain, suspension, and frame. You don't want anything to come off while you are gone because it wasn't fastened properly.

-- Are the clutch and the brakes in mint condition and ready to handle the rigors of a long trip? Double check headlights, brake lights, and turn signals to make sure nothing needs replacing.

-- Check all fluids on your bike so that you'll be ready to roll on the big day.

-- Finally, check the tread on your tires and replace one or both if you have the least bit of concern about wear and tear. If they are in good condition already, just double check tire pressure and make adjustments if necessary.

Set an Itinerary

You don't have to know where you'll be staying every single night, but you should map out a general route and decide where you will stay. Whether you plan on staying in hotels or tent camping will make a great deal of difference in your personal preparations and the gear you'll need to take.

Whether you plan on going to the deserts of Arizona or cruise through the rainy Pacific Northwest will be a determinant for your clothing choices. So sit down and think things through: you will pack more effectively and be better prepared for any eventuality.

Get Yourself Ready

Packing for a road trip can be tricky, especially if you don't own a cruising bike that is already equipped for such travel. You may want to invest in some saddle bags or even tow a small motorcycle trailer behind you if you need to. Keep clothing under your exterior bike gear light since it's summer, and layer if necessary.

Be sure to get yourself in good physical shape and plan on making frequent rest stops along the way. The demands of riding on the open road, in traffic, and in unfamiliar territory are extremely rigorous, so don't overestimate your physical abilities even if you are a seasoned veteran. Do not fall prey to the perils of fatigue: accidents are not an option.

Make your trip one to remember by preparing both your motorcycle and yourself before setting out: you'll be glad you did.
