The Power Behind Keeping A Daily Journal

By Art Gib

I am a person that really enjoys reminiscing over the good, the bad, the glorious, and even the ugly moments of life. It must run in my family, as my mother is an avid scrapbooker, and my brothers are all tremendous storytellers (and their favorite material is drawn from past family experiences).

Since I'm the writer in my family, I keep a journal to help me remember. Keeping a daily journal can be tremendously helpful outside of simply recording your comings-and-goings or your random thoughts. In fact, it can be a tremendous way to help you stay motivated with all your goals as well as simplify many of life's complications.

Taking time to write down goals that you have--big or small--can help to make them more realistic and solidify them in your mind. Continuing to write about the actions you take to achieve these goals will help you both track your progress as well as recognize your weak points.

This is why many nutritionists and dietitians suggest that individuals hoping to lose weight keep a food journal: it creates a sense of accountability when you are trying to make permanent lifestyle changes to improve the quality of their health.

As you illuminate your goals, you will also be able to clarify your values and thereby simplify your life. You will be able to better identify those obligations and added stresses which only distract from your ultimate ambitions. What your priorities are (and what they probably should be) will become more apparent, and then you will be able to make adjustments as needed.

Documenting the small joys and significant blessings that arise each day will help you to see the "bigger picture," and find greater happiness and fulfillment in your life as a whole.

A journal is a great place to vent ill feelings as well. This can be a great tool to strengthen your relationships. As you write about being irritated that your spouse didn't take out the trash or forgot to fill up the gas tank like you asked, you will feel better, and you will soon begin to realize just how unimportant these things are.

As you write, you will come to know yourself better. You can begin to straighten out attributes that are unattractive and continually improve your talents. In the long run, this will boost your confidence.

Positive energy will help to draw in others that think and act positively, and you will be able to influence others for good. Keeping a daily journal can be a powerful force in your life. Why not start today?
