How To Remove Rug And Carpet Stains
Rug and carpet cleaning is never easy. A person can hire professionals to do the job. But if you can't afford such a service you can take matters in your own hands and clean the rug and or carpet yourself. One of the worst parts of rug and carpet cleaning is removing stains. Untreated stains can harm and damage a rug and or carpet in more ways than one. There are many ways a person can combat a stain to prolong the life and cleanliness of their rug or carpet.
One of the more common types of rug stains is urine. Many pet owners are on constant watch to make sure their dog or cat doesn't relieve themselves on their carpet. But as stated earlier stains can yield a lot more problems other than causing bad odors and unsightly blotches. Over time an area that is constantly urinated on by an animal can deteriorate. The harmful chemicals in urine actually can cause many rugs and carpets to become weaker and more fragile. The rug or carpet can actually come apart. The damaged done by urine is permanent so it is best to treat any urine stain as quickly as possible. Any kind of foreign stain is harmful to rug and carpets but this is just an example of an extreme but possible case.
No matter what kind of stain it is the first rule is you must react as soon as possible. As soon as the substance is spilled get a paper towel, dish towel, or some kind of rag and quickly blot the excess liquid. Quickly absorbing the extra liquid will prevent it from spreading throughout the rug resulting in a bigger stain. Don't scrub or wipe the stain at this point. This will also result in spreading the stain. Depending on what the stain is there are many different steps to clean them.
To remove ordinary grease and ink stains it is best to apply some dry cleaning fluid on the stain. Then using a clean rag, wet it with warm water and dish washing liquid and continue to blot the spot. Let the rag sit on top of the stain for a couple of minutes.
For liquids such as wine or juice it is best to use laundry detergent or ammonia to blot the stain. Sponge it off with club soda and repeat the process again by applying more detergent.
Ammonia is also good for removing any stains caused by dairy products or eggs. After the ammonia is applied it must be blotted back up with a mixture of warm water and white vinegar.
After you have blotted each stain accordingly place paper towels over the wet spot. Leave the paper towels over the stain over night. Once it is dry brush and vacuum over the spot. Using a flat brush and a vacuum cleaner will remove and of the dry particles left over.
Using these steps you'll be sure to remove any pesky stain. You will surely prolong the life of your carpet if you take good care of it. But if you feel that this is a bit much then hire professionals. If you can't afford them then take matters into your own hands.
