Current Event Movies Make Good Film

By Art Gib

Producer Eran Riklis and his cousin (and co producer) Ira Riklis have produced a good film using current, hot button events as the backdrop. The movie, "Lemon Tree", is a film based on a true story of women who keeps the Israeli military at bay to save her grove of lemon trees.

The story, however, is much deeper than that of a women and her lemon trees. The story is about the the political issues of Palestine and Israel. The story is about the west bank. The story is a modern day David and Goliath story. The story is about relationships. The story is about how our modern day world realities of terrorist has changes the way we think and react to circumstances in a way that we may never have before only a few years ago.

When the Israeli military erects a lookout tower over a lemon grove before the defense minister moves next door to Salma Zidane, played by the Israeli Arab actress Hiam Abbass, it spells trouble. Salma, who has a grove of lemon trees that was planted half a century ago by her late father, finds herself the target of the Israeli military as they seek to secure and then chop the grove of trees down because they feel it poses a threat to harbor terrorist. She decides to fight for the grove of trees and she finds a lawyer who is willing to take on her seemingly hopeless case. The case makes it all the way to the supreme court of the land. In the middle of all of that she finds that a bit of love is springing up between the lawyer, who is divorced, and herself. That little twist to the story gives a strong underpinning that tugs on the emotions of an audience of all ages..

The other side plot in the story involves the defense minister's wife, Mira and Salma, the Palestinian woman who owns the lemon tree farm. They slowly develop a relationship as they see each other through the wire fence that separates them. It is the story of human beings being human amidst a political storm that should separate them. Somehow, they see pat all of that and understand each other as another person deserving of respect rather than as a mere obstacle.

All of this draws attention. First on a local level, then on a national level and eventually on an international level.
