Bingo Business in the 21st Century

By Fred Ramsbottom
Jul 1, 2009
It is interesting for many to see how big of a business bingo is in the current world. When Edwin Lowe was watching a game called Beano in 1929 at a carnival, he was amazed at how enthralled the players were, simply by marking off numbers on a card that were being called by a single person. Taking the game to New York, Lowe began franchising the game, which had changed its name to bingo after an over excited player shouted bingo instead of beano and it became, almost literally, an overnight success.

With the decline of the offline game in recent years, online bingo has seen somewhat of an extreme increase in popularity. Played all over the world, it is estimated that the world of online bingo turns over around one billion dollars each year. Although a staggering figure in itself, it is transformed into a brilliant figure even further when one releases that this is the amount of money turned over in the online game outside of the United States.

One of the reasons why online bingo is so popular is due to the ease in which it can be played. After the initial software has been downloaded, which a large amount of online halls require, the games can be played with almost no input from the player. For example, most of the major halls simply require the player to choose the number of cards they wish to play with. Once this has been done, the player can choose the auto-dab feature and the computer will mark any numbers off cards that are called by the electronic bingo caller. In some cases, the auto dab will feature will also call line or house should the player receive either.

Whilst this process may detract from the traditional playing of the game for many, it not only leaves the player to play another bingo game, therefore doubling their odds of winning money, but also to focus on one of the other major draws to the online bingo world, the chat room.

Bingo is a massively social game and this can be seen on the communities that are created in online game halls. Players look forward to speaking to other players and talk about a range of topics, from congratulating each other on winnings to simply discussing what happened on last nights television. Many believe the success of online bingo is down to the community feel that is apparent in most online halls.

It is without doubt that bingo is a massively popular business now, with everyone. Bingo is no longer a traditionally older persons game, as can be seen in the fact that the online game is the most popular past time in women under the age of 25. Whether its the lure of the progressive jackpots, or the fantastic social side, all of the points that lead people to play online bingo are helping to ensure that this fantastic game is and stays, as popular as it was when Edwin Lowe first set eyes on it.
