Get The Warmth Back Into That Dark And Gloomy Room

By Anne Levine
Jul 1, 2009
Have you ever wondered why one particular room of your house never gets used? I am by no means suggesting that you have an extra room in the house with cobwebs and bird nests which people have not visited for your years. That's taking things a little too literally, what I am referring to is the room which somehow never gets used for those cozy little chats, or just for lazing around or any such voluntary and fun activities. A highly functional room which you go to when absolutely necessary is generally the result of some not so very intelligent decorating.

Getting this room back into 'your favorite places to hang about in the house' list is really not that difficult and can be achieved easily with minimum of expenditure. A few right accessories placed at just the right places can brighten up a gloomy room almost instantly. While a few, tiny decorating gaffes can take the life out of an otherwise decently done up room.

.Lights overhead can be harsh and uncomfortable. A glaring light shining straight down on the sofa may make your guests feel like they are in the spotlight and uncomfortable. Instead choose adjustable lighting. Not only is it affordable to buy but it can help you lower your monthly power bill. You can set the brightness of the light depending on the mood you are trying to create in the room. It's nice to have control over your lighting.

If you have blinds or shades on the windows that are heavy, its time to get rid of them. This not only makes the room dark but it can make the room seem smaller. Try using sheers over the window and use fabric window coverings to pull closed on cold winter nights.

You will need to place an area rug down on your floor. This will instantly give your room a focal point. Choose a rug that appeals to your senses and you will be able to make it look and feel comfortable. You can also place an area rug on the wall for a great focal point. Place the furniture around the area rug and help separate a corner for a welcoming nook. You can also use area rugs to cover up ugly stains.

So don't just pass that room by anymore fix it up and make it the most popular room in the house. Your kids will love it as a hang out, company will feel at home, and you can enjoy a good book by the window.
