Will Teenagers Be Able to Find Jobs This Summer?

By Seth Howard
Jul 1, 2009
Sometime during the middle teen years, kids start to look for summer jobs. This might be partly because they want the money or because they do it at their parents urging. Many parents feel that their children should start to venture out and learn a little about what it is like to have a job and the responsibility that comes with it.

This year a new situation is developing where many teens might be out job hunting not to make extra money for themselves but for their family. With times so tough for many families economically, some families might need their teenagers to get summer jobs and earn some money to help out. Much like in olden times on the farm where kids worked in the family business to make ends meet, the teens of 2009 might have to help out by getting a job.

This might put tremendous pressure on the system if the jobs for teen just aren't there in the volume that is needed. On one hand you might have more teens than ever looking for work and on the other hand you might have employers who have fewer than ever jobs available. If the economy stays in the doldrums where it is now, many companies are having trouble staying afloat and have no resources to create summer jobs.

Teenagers also want jobs so that they can get some job experience. Any sort of job experience that can be put on a resume is important for young adults if they are to get better jobs down the line. Getting any kind of work experience is good for teenagers to help them learn responsibility and show prospective employers that they can be trusted.

This summer though, teens might need a job more for the money they can make than the experience they can get. More families than ever can use the extra side income that a teenager can make and the pressure for them to get a job might be intense. If the economy does not start to improve along with the job situation, this might be a very difficult summer for many.
