Sony PRS Series or Amazon Kindle Ereader?
While few months ago the future of the eReaders was uncertain, today we can say that the eReaders are here to stay.
Amazon's Kindle 2 is currently dominating the eReaders market, and the Sony PRS series ereaders are very close behind. Many users have emailed me about which model they should get.
The devices are doing their thing well enough, and I have heard good things about both of the choices. However, there are differences that would influence you decision.
The Kindle is a natural choice for many potential users. With its wireless connectivity and the huge arsenal of books, newspapers, magazines and blogs, the choice has already been made in the minds of many.
On the other hand, the Kindle lacks native PDF support. That fact should make many business and academic users think twice before making the plunge.
The reality is that most of the academic materials are available in PDF format. And, the fact is that Kindle's conversion algorithm often makes documents display in an awkward way, often having alignment problems. The same is applicable to business documents.
On the other hand, Sony PRS series eReaders, offer native PDF support, making it the default for students and business oriented audience. Although users have sent in reports of steeper learning curves and USB connectivity limitation, making the experience different than with the Kindle.
But, wouldn't students and business professionals have a computer connected to the internet anyways?
So, to sum things up:
If you consume newspapers on daily basis and enjoy magazines, you will really like the Amazon Kindle that would deliver the paper every morning and make the magazines and the plethora of books Amazon carries available within seconds via the wireless connection.
However, if your main content is going to be in PDF format, go for the Sony. True, you're bound to your computer, but being able to read PDFs as-is is a huge plus.
