Do You Know How to Choose a Restaurant that is Safe, Healthy and Hygienic?

It's no wonder that most of us love dining out. Let's face it, having someone else prepare and serve a great meal in a pleasant environment allows us to enjoy good company without the normal worries. It can be a problem though if the restaurant is unclean. Who wants to get food poisoning? Unfortunately, most people are not able to tell if a restaurant is safe to eat at.

This is where food safety inspectors come into play and provide much needed help. There are a number of obvious factors that would indicate a lack of general cleanliness and they are worth examining. Here is a brief overview of some of the more obvious negatives an uncleanly establishment may embody.

An obvious indication that the dining establishment lacks quality is the presence of garbage and waste both inside and outside the premises. Even if the trash has been removed from the kitchen, the presence of garbage just outside is not a good sign. Overflowing garbage bins attract rodents and the growth of bacteria and germs.

Now, if the garbage does not appear to be rotting, that could be a positive sign. Some restaurants are busy and must throw out a great deal of refuse every day. However, when garbage is rotting and emitting a foul odor, this would indicate the garbage has been there quite some time. Such an establishment should definitely be avoided.

Bad smells are like flashing red lights when it comes to dining. However, even if an odour isn't exactly foul, you should pay attention and ask yourself some serious questions. A 'funny' smell should be enough to warn you that food may be spoiling or the establishment isn't being properly cleaned on a regular basis. So, if restaurant food (or even the restaurant itself) smells a bit odd, it would probably be a good idea to avoid it.

On the other hand, you can also look for signs that a restaurant actually has high standards. A good rule of thumb is that if a dining establishment is consistently busy, it's probably okay. Any business that has been operating for any length of time and attracts a lot of customers (particularly return customers) is doing something right. A busy restaurant is also going to go through food quickly and have to replace it regularly, making spoilage less likely.

You can also tell a lot by giving the interior of a restaurant a quick look over. Is it kept neat and in good order? Do they prominently display certifications from professional health agencies on the wall or counter? If so, this is a good sign. Health agencies are careful about who they endorse. Positive certifications by health inspectors can be trusted and mean the restaurant is safe to dine at.

When we go out to eat, we all want to have a safe and enjoyable experience, but this will be dependent on the cleanliness and hygiene of the establishment. A great tasting meal can become a nightmare if it is full of bacteria. The good news is, by following these tips we can learn to identify and choose safe, clean and hygienic restaurants and avoid those which are suspect.
