Discount Home Improvement: Do It Yourself Or Hire Out?

By Christine Harrell
Jul 1, 2009
Eventually, every homeowner looks around their house and instead of seeing 'home,' they begin to see 'projects.' A kitchen that needs updating, a bathroom that could use some new tile and a little TLC, a room that needs to be added to make space for a growing family. As more time passes, more projects seem to come out of the woodwork.

Updating a house, or updating several rooms in a house, can get expensive quickly. There are materials to buy, contractors to hire, and depending on how major the construction job, costs may even include hotel rooms and dining out.

However, with the markets and the economy in their current slump, saving money and pinching pennies leaves no room for extra expenses. Instead, people are finding creative discount home improvement methods and other options for discount remodeling. There are numerous steps and methods people can take in order to save some money on their next building or handyman project. In this article, we'll explore building options that may help you save some money.

Go Solo and Do It Yourself

Over the past few years, the interest in do-it-yourself fixes and do-it-yourself remodels has grown exponentially. There is a firmly held belief among DIYers that anything that can be done by a contractor can also be done without having to pay for the help. The idea that anyone can fix or make anything for their home by simply reading how and following directions is a compelling one for those watching their purse strings.

For those who are handy and patient, doing it yourself is a perfect solution. They can get great fixes simply by putting in the effort to do it right and follow directions to a tee. For them, DIY saves tons of money because the only cost is materials. For others though, DIY can be a nightmare: projects left unfinished, finished poorly, or in need of more expensive fixes.

Hire A Design Build Contractor

A design build contractor differs from many contractors in a few important ways. When giving an estimate, a typical contractor will quote on a 'wage plus materials' system. This gives them the ability to give you a lower quote, thus helping them land more jobs. However, the price you're quoted is not actually the price you will pay. The price quoted is amount you pay for labor. The big question mark is how much you will have to pay for the materials.

With a design build contractor, it is a little easier to pin down how much you will need to pay for renovations and building. The estimates given by design build contractors are for the entire project -- wages and materials. This means that as opposed to giving a rock bottom price, they can instead leave you with a clear idea of how much your discount remodeling will cost you. Also, because these firms both design and build, they can also help lower the overall costs because they don't have to farm out for plans and designs.

For discount home improvement projects, you have options. You can go it alone, hire a contractor, or work with a design build contractor. All can allow you to save money and achieve good results. However the varying levels of difficulty, costs, and opportunity for surprises makes each one attractive in their own way.
