How a Surveillance Camera System Can Help Maintain Real Estate Values

By Jack Krohn

Yesterday my son in law called from Germany to tell me about a story he saw on CNN. Guess that shows for sure what a small world we live in. The story in a nutshell was about how neighborhoods around the U.S. that have been decimated by foreclosures have also had declining home values. This is further exacerbated by gang related vandalism and drugs in the vacant homes.

It isn't just gangs either. Families who have been displaced by home foreclosure and may be down on their luck have taken occupancy of vacant homes. Once the bank forecloses a property do you honestly think they will spend another nickel protecting it? The homes lie vacant just waiting for trouble.

Some police departments have turned the other way in the later case and have very limited resources to deal with the gangs and drugs. So a conscientious homeowner who just happens to be in a neighborhood with several foreclosures cannot usually rely on law enforcement help. They just sit back and watch their home value go down the toilet.

Some are not content with that are actively fighting back. Here are some things they are doing that help.

1. Most neighborhoods have covenants especially pertaining to appearance. Force the bank to be a good neighbor and take care of the place. They actually have a stake in the community too.
2. Start or join a Neighborhood Watch Program. Your local Sheriff's department can help get it going.
3. Get some surveillance cameras for your neighborhood or at least for your home. People are less likely to vandalize if they see surveillance cameras.

First and most important, a well placed home surveillance camera can send an awesome signal to a savvy burglar. And don't fool yourself burglars are smart. Why would they knowingly plan on robbing a home with a surveillance camera and risk getting caught when down the street there is a home without one?

If they are unfortunate enough to not see the surveillance camera and burglarize the property they will get caught. You've seen it yourself on the evening news-the masked burglar doing his thing at a bank, liquor store or convenience store-they always get caught don't they?

So consider getting a surveillance camera for your home or neighborhood. They are easy to install, more affordable than before and will work to help eliminate the very real threats of vandals and gangs and most importantly help to keep your property values up.
