How Is A Small, Local Courier Different From FedEx?
When you deal with a local, small courier service instead of deciding to go with FedEx, you are in for a totally different experience than that of shipping with one of the courier giants. A small Philadelphia courier service is not only operated a totally different way from a company like FedEx, but the experience of doing business with them is also going to be very different.
This extends to almost all aspects of the transaction including speed, price, and service. This isn't an endorsement of either of those methods, simply a disclosure of the fact that there are some large differences between the two different styles of companies.
First of all, if you are shipping locally or internationally, it might make more sense to go with one or the other style of companies. For instance, a local courier company will know the city extremely well, with many drivers that have lived there all their lives, able to make deliveries in extremely good time.
A driver for a larger company may lack that completely. However, the larger companies are experienced in making international shipments, and a small, local courier would likely just have to transfer the package to them anyway, wasting time. This means it can be faster to go with a small company for local deliveries, and a large company for longer deliveries.
The service that you receive between those two kinds of companies is also likely going to be very different from one type of company to the next. When dealing with FedEx, most of the time you are going to be boiled down to nothing more than an account number. Every time you call with a concern there is a good chance that you will be speaking with a different person, and if you have concerns it can be very difficult to feel as if you are getting them heard. On the other hand, a local company can get to know you better, and begin to give you a much more personalized customer service approach.
Costs again can vary greatly. On a regular delivery you might find better rates with a large company. However, if you're shipping something with a strange requirement, at a strange time, or with a strange request that is in any way different from the norm, the surcharges and fees from the large company might skyrocket your price. On the other hand, the smaller company might specialize in 24 hour deliveries, eliminating the extra cost.
