Introduction to Natural Skin Care Practices

By Sarah Corr
Jul 1, 2009
These natural skin care problems have always been with us, and have always been highly effective, but it not until recently that people have started going back to them in an endeavor to take their 'green' living efforts to the next level, and to save themselves from the obnoxious side effects of the chemicals used in other forms of skin care.

Most of these natural skin care practices revolve around the areas of nutrition and cleansing, or cleansing, as it also referred to in some skin care circles.

With regard to nutrition, it has been observed that certain dietary habits - like the consumption of the so-called 'junk' food are to blame for many distressing skin conditions. Experts on natural skin care therefore advice the people using dietary strategies for skin care to steer clear of such junk foods - which essentially are foods that are either too high in fat, salt or sugar. On the contrary, people pursuing natural skin care using dietary practices are advised to opt for foods richer in fiber, while also increasing their intake of the good fats (for the lubrication of the skin which is in perpetual unseen friction with the atmosphere) as well as increasing their intake of water (as dehydration is a major cause of skin problems).

The natural skin care practices which revolve around cleaning on the other hand are based on the understandings that the skin is the biggest excretory organ in the body, and that the cells which make it up are perpetually dying out and being replaced by new ones. It follows then that unchecked, the accumulation of toxins expelled from the body on the skin's surface would cause a number of skin problems, especially if we happen to be ingested lots of toxins (as most of us are unknowingly doing). Similarly, the accumulation of dead skin cells on the skin surface is also bound to have some unpleasant effects, hence the need for proper cleaning and cleansing.

One natural skin care practice based on cleaning for instance, and which has shown incontestable efficacy is exfoliation. The idea behind exfoliation is to clear the skin of dead cells (which if not removed have no alternative but to accumulate on the skin, thence blocking its 'breathing' pores). And sophisticated as it sounds, exfoliation is actually something you can do for yourself, and all you really need for it is only a special kind of brush. Yet apart from its skin care benefits, exfoliation also has very enjoyable soothing effects on the nerves, and has also been known to improve on blood circulation, making it a holistic (all round) health aid. Incidentally, these 'side-benefits' of exfoliation in turn also have major skin care implications by themselves. The calming effect, for instance, translates into huge benefits on the skin, given that stress is one of the major causes of skin problems.
